Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp (Silverton, Geraldine) is visiting Christchurch and is staying at Warwick House. Mrs J". G. Collins (Eversleigh street) hag returned from a Holiday visit to North, Canterbury and Marlborough. Mrs ,W. Baxter Russell (New Plymouth) is the guest of Mrs C. bi Russell (Worcester street). Mr and Mrs P. J. McLean, Greymouth. arrived by the ferry steamer from Wellington yesterday and are staying at Warner's Hotel. Mrs McLean leaves for Greymouth to-day and Mr. McLoan on Saturday. Miss Crombie (Wellington) is visiting her sister, Mrs S. J. Sampson (Brett's road). Miss Corry, who arrived some weeks ago from England, and is at present the guest of Lady Kinsey, Papanui road, is leaving to-night for Hawke's Bay to take up a position on the teaching staff at Woodford House.

CHRISTCHURCH LADIES' GOLF CLUB. OPENING OF THE SEASON. The members of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club marked the opening of the season yesterday with a flag match, which was played in perfect weather, for prizes given by the captain of the Club, Miss Jessie Wilkin. The par for the match was fixed at 70, and the winner in the senior division was Mrs F. Brittan, who carried the flag to the shallow bunker guarding the 18th green. In the junior division, the winner, Miss Anthea Loughnan placed the flag on the fairway of the 18th, about forty yards from the pin. The members, of whom there was a very large attendance, were the guests of the club for tea. The reception rooms were decorated with hydrangeas, asters, and Michaelmas daisies, and the tea tables with zinnias. The Club's guests included Lady Wigram (president), Mrs G. G. The jnohtJiJy meeting of the committee of the North Linwood Free Kindergarten was held in the School Hall, those present being Mesdames Jarden (in the chair), Retallick, Taylor, Stewart, Baker, Kearney, Holloway, Small, and Powell. ■: The parents' committee attended the meeting to discuss plans and have the Association's rules explained. Several accounts were passed for payment at the meeting. All members were invited to attend the Association meetings, which am held every third Wednesday in each month. The harvest' festival will be held on March 26th,, when parents and friends will be welcofne to spend the morning at the kindergarten. During the month clothing and money had been collected for the earthquake sufferers. It was reported that Miss Evans bad ,i been transferred' to the Linwood Kin- i dergarten from Selwyn, and* Miss Godfrey had,been appointed assistant a£ Linwood in place of Miss Shanks, who had been transferred to Invercargill. .The roll number was 53, highest attendance 43, lowest attendance 20, and average attendance 40. Subscriptions for the month amounted to £2 14s 3d*
A NEW ZEALAND ARTIST. Mrs Maud' Sherwood, the well-known artist, who revisited New Zealand, the land** of her s birth, a few yeara ago, is at present living in Borne, where she 'has /spent i the last »two-winters. Some months ago she completed a ten-weeW* , tour through Italy, visiting about 25 of the towns... most interesting from anartist's viewpoint, and recently' she speht a fortnight at Spoleto, painting with an Anstralian artist, Gladys Owen. Mrs "Sherwood has lately been deveting much time to woodcuts, and is grehtly interested in monotypes, of which she iB making a collection. In a letter to , afciend "in Christchurch she mentions a visit, Jo Mr and Mrs Sydney Thompson in Brittany, where she and Mr Thompson went painting together, "He had rdone some lovely things/' she adds.
