ASHBURTON. OFFICIAL PROTESTS. A counter-petition, to that forwarded. - tothe Minister for internal Affair# some time ago with the proposal that a large portion of Allenton be merged in the borough, has been circulated among » ratepayers in the affected area by a committee of residents objecting to ■ the change. The petition, which , contains about 180 names, together with the reasons why the proposal should .be nullified, has already been forwarded to the Min«" ister for Internal Affairs. Formal protests have also been forwarded by the Ashburton County Council and the Upper Ashburton Eoad Board, both of which are at present responsible for the affairs of Allenton. Farmer's Failure. >. ■ A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt eatate of Samuel Bichard Bryan, of Hinds, farmer, was held, before the Official Assignee (Mr A. J, Ching) at the Courthouse, Ashburton, this -morn-' ing. Bankrupt was represented by ' My L. A. Charles. • v •. There were: four creditors present. The financial statement disclosed a deficiency of £IOO9 Is 4d. Unsecured creditors totalled £347 Is 4d, and secured creditors £2OOO. The estimated valtte ,of the securities was £1305, and' the only asset was a ■thresher estimated to produce £33. The principal unsecured creditors were:—W. H. Hunt, £6 2s 6d; L. .J,'Watt, £9 16s; C. E. Bailey, £5 14s!3d; Transport Company, £24; County Council, £l2 lis 3d; Bos# and Glendining, £6 4s (all .©f Ashburton) j A. S. State Advances Office, Wellington, £600; and Farmers' Cooperative Association/ Ltd!; Ashburton, £705. In his sworn statement, bankrupt reviewed his activities sincO,he commenced farming at; Hinds in % July, 1923. He ascribed hit bankruptcy to. the.fall in the price of stock and wool,. and to the present general depression. He. could make no offer to his creditors. He, was a married man, with a family of four, the eldest being 8* years old. In reply to the Assignee bankrupt said there was about eleven years of the Crown leaße to run. He had paid his own filing" fee; but his life assurance policy- had lapsed. His wife had bought the furniture with her own money' they were married, about ten years ago* , The Assignee said bankrupt would " have been la a sound position if sheep prices were on the 1928 basis. , Moving that the winding up of the estate' be left; in the hands of. the Assignee, Mr T. S. J. Doherty aaid it would ' be difficult to find. a harder-working couple than the Bryans had-been. His remarks were endorsed by Mr H.
