I4out<*Colo»el Thorns, v of the New Zealand' Staff Corps, arrived to-day to take, over the command of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, vice Brigadier Orpen, Palmer, who ha* retired, The. new Commandant controls the most extraordinary volunteer force m the world, consisting of Britjiah, Jtussian, American, and Ohinese/compawan. It is supported by the' Municipal Council to. the extent of £40,000 par annum. This is the fifst occasion on which the jeommand'has been given to coloww officer.
