(special to the press.) GBEYMOTJTH, March 10. Mr and Mrs J, Teasdale, of Masterton, are visiting relatives in Cobden. Mrs M. Woodley (Christchurch) is visiting her sister, Mrs Fitzgerald, Kumara. - Miss Nellie Burns (Cobden) left today on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mr T. Kelly and his sister, Miss M. Kelly, left to-day on holiday to Chnstohurch, . - , Mr and Mrs J. Wearne (Otira) and Mr H. Seebeck have left on a motor tour to Auckland. . . , Mr G. Selby, who has been visiting relatives in Greyinotith, returned today to Auckland, . Mr J. J. Mcintosh (Hokitika) was elected president of the United Fire Brigades' Accident Fund, at the annual conference. ' ■ The death occurred to-night of Mr Lewis Sheppard, aged 55, a native of Mauritius. He lived for 30 years on the West Coast. He is survived by a widow, five daughters, and two sons. Cricket. Further cricket fixtures played on Sunday under the West Coast- Cricket Association's fixtures, were:— Kamaka defeated Camerons at Kamaka, gaining a three-point victory. Kamaka scored 109 in their first innings (A. Hurst 37, Anderson 19, P. Mullins 17). Camerons in their first Strike were dismissed for 45 (Griffiths 22, being the only batsman to reach double figures). In the second innings: Kamaka made 54 (Hannan 19) and Camerons 45 (Fitzgerald 12, Buss IS). In the match, Marist A y. Kunanga, set down to be played 'at Kunanga, the Marist team attended, but the match could not be played owing, to the home team being unable to produce a ball. The Marist team therefore claimed a three-point victory. Hokitika secured a three-point victory over Ruatapu, compiling 73 in _ their first innings (Adamson 18, Goode 17, IV Stapleton 13), whilst Buatapu made 32 in their first (Mcintosh 11), and only 16 in their second innings- For ! Hokitika, Goode: accounted for 5 Buai tapu wickets for 4 in the second strike, l Eade four for 3, and Stapleton ono tor Six. "/■ '■ ' . An interesting position has arisen as a result, as the championship at; HoIkitika leaves both Kanieri, and Hokitika at the head of affairs, with an ■ equal number of points,. Kanieri being beaten by Bimu in what was looked upon as a certain win for Kanieri.
Diphtheria Outbreak. An outbreak of diphtheria has occurred, at Tiroroa, about twelve cases having been aent to the Westport Hospital. The public hall has been closed down for some time 'by the authorities. , ■- Bible Class Rally.
A combined Bible Class rally was held at the Church, of. the Resurrection, Cobden, on Su&day, when the Rev. A. W. Stuart, the travelling secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society/was. present, and gave an outline of the work being carried on by the Society. Later the toembers were entertained at tea, aid attended , the Cobden Anglican Churoh in the evening. Scouts and Guides.
The contingent of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides who took' part in the welcome to Chief-Guide lord Baden-Powell and Chief-Guide Lady- Baden-Powell, at Christchurch on Saturday, returned yesterday afternoon, All speak in glowing terms of 'the arrangements made for their hospitality and entertainment during the visit. The Westport party returned to their homes last evening by motors, travelling by the Coastal road.
Teachers' Institute. At the annual meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Teachers' Institute, Mr M. Malone presiding, the following witre elected officers; for the ensuing year:—-President, Mr A. M. Laing; vice-president, Mr S. A. Lorking; sec 1 retary, Mr C. Williams; treasurer, Mr C. Bteheno; executive, Messrs J. McCullough, H. Haig, and. Miss, L. Williams. ' Considerable discission took place re" garding the proposed ' salary cut, and it was decided to support the action ~.of the central executive, and suggested that probationers and low-salaried teachers should not be brought under the "cut," and that if sjich were imperative, that it be in force *for only twelve months. ■ Technical School. - The Board of the Grey Technical High School met last evening. The members of the Inangahua Tennis Club, visited Beef ton' on Sunday, playing a 'match with the local, team# who secured' a victory by 20 sets to 14, the games being 171 to 140. A team from St. Columba Club, Greymouth, visited Waiuta on Sunday, and in a match with Waiuta Tennis Club won by 10 sets to 8, the games being 78 to 72.
Cycle Races. ■ The second series of bicycle races for the Gillman Cup were run on Saturday at the course being from Hokitika to'Woodstock and back. There was a good field, Ohas. Pfahlert registering his second successive win. The results were:— Senior Race —C. Pfahlert (2min) 1 1, F. Olson (2min) 2, A. Martin (2smitt) 8. Ten others started. Time, 24min ssec. Boys' Bace—J. Honey (scr) 1, M. Smyth (60sec) 2. The only other starter, J. .Olsen, broke his chain and did not finish. Croquet. In the first life in the championships being played off at the Makura Croquet Club, Ctreymouth, Mrs Mercer beat Mrs, Reynolds, Mrs Davies beat- Mrs, Scott, Miss Sheedy beat Mrs- Warnes, - Miss Hambleton beat Mrs Coburn, Mrs Whibley beat Mrs Thomas, Mrs Hannan beat Mrg Haglnnd, Mrs W. Freight railed through the .Otira tunnel last week from the West Coast totalled 9299 tons, compared with 14,805 tons for the corresponding period in 1930, and' 8097 tons in 1929. Motor Accidents. "Whilst driving his car to Kairaata oa Monday,' Mr P. Griffon, of Kotuku, ran off the foad. The front axle of his car was topi off, but Mr (jWffen escaped unhurt. Yesterday, tfhile coming down a hill near Marsden, a lorry driven by a man 'named Davis overturned, damaging .its front axle and steering-gear.
