ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.
ANNUAL APPEAL. , Every year the ambulance department of the : Order of St. Jotn in this district lifts to Appeal for funds to enable its activities to be carried on. The work-was commence*! iu a small way in; 1886, but the various eervicea have expanded with the increase in 'population until now the w^jrk : has become recognised as a most. nece?s&ry publio "service, and the -Cost ,has proportionately increased: until a sum. of £I6OO is now. required annually for working expenses. The greater proportion of this amount. Ib absorbed by :th« St. John- Free Ambulance Service, but -it is claimed to'be the Jeast costly and at .the same time the. most'efficient, ambulance service in New Zealand. The, ambulances are. continually being brought up and are. sfca&ed by " skilful drivers and attend-' ants, who are trained members -of the St. John Ambulance Brigade who know, what to do in any case of accident or sickness,. The 'service ie under the direct supervision of the: medical: offioers, of the : Brigade/ 'con*' sequently the residents of North Canterbury cart rest assured ,that the sick and the injured arer being well* looked after by the 'St.- John Free Ambulance Service.' Other directions in which the department is at work are''in-the instruction/of-persons in the principles of x firot aid to the injured and.in home nursing and hygiene, and .in the. provision and"*- maintenance of ftee first .aid depots for publio us£. The annual appeal is now jsommoncing, and It is hoped everyone will support this old-established institution. - •-
