PERSONAL. (spicul to the press.) - GREYMOUTH, March 8. •Mr J, McFarlane, captain of the • Kumara Fire Brigade, left yesterday for Nelson to attend the United Fire Brigades' Conference. Mrs A. Burt left to-day on a holiday visit to her mother, Mrs W. Hancock, Christchurch. . Mr D. McKane, secretary of the Inangahua Miners' Union, left Eeefton yesterday to attend the Labour Conference to be held in Wellington. Mr W. M. Kerr, who retired from the telegraph branch of the Westport. Post Office on Thursday, after forty years' service, wbb met by the staff and presented with a memento. Oh behalf of the staff, Mr Flett, the chiefcpostmaster, wished Mr and Mrs Kerr every happiness in their retirement. Mr A. S. Duncan, a director of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., who has been visiting Greymouth, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Dr. J. G. Armstrong, of Napier, has joined the resident medical staff of the Grey Hospital. Mr 0. Isdell, who for sixteen years filled the position of telegraphist at Westport, retires at the end of this month on superannuation. The' Leader of the Labour Party, Mr H. E. Holland, arrived to-day to attend the annual meeting of the Bugler Labour Eepresentation Committee. He leaves for Wellington to-morrow. Mrs H. and Miss I. Weenink left yesterday on holiday to InvercargilL Mr Samuel Beaton left yesterday en route to Blantyre, Scotland. Residence Destroyed. \ A five-roomed residence, occupied by Mr and Mrs J. Orman, Millerton, was destroyed by *o on Friday. The fire had a good hold when discovered, and the occupants had to malte a hasty exit in their night attiro. Nothing was Baved. Obituary. The death occurred in the Bullcr Hospital yesterday of Mr William Davis, miner, of Denniston, einglej 52 years.of age. He had a good record in the boxing ring, and trained Lcs Darcy. Lorry Accident. An accident happened off the Westland Main South road on Friday, when a lorry owned by tho Boss Lime Company, when passing a lorry of thes, Westland Central Dairy Company on the hill of the ,Waitaha Settlement road, went over the siding owing to the filling on the outer side? subsiding under the Iftrry'e weight. The lorry in capsizing burst into flameß, and was de» etroyod. The driver had a narrow . escape. 1 Bowling. ' The Marlborough bowlers on Friday played two matches at Westport. They were beaten in tho first match by 97 to 107, but won tho second by 128 to 98. Playing at Greymouth yesterday the local rinks won by 124 to 68.
