He had previously complained of heart trouble. The inquest was held before the District Coroner, (Mr E. Clark, J.P.) at the Courthouse yesterday afternoon, When a verdict of death from heart failure was returned. , Objection to be Lodged. A decision to lodge a formal objection with the Minister for Internal Affairs to the inclusion of a portion of Allenton in the borough of Ashburton wasagreed to at the Ashburton County Council meeting yesterday. .The Department of Internal Affairs notified th&t a petition had been received for alteration of the Ashburton borough boundaries requesting the inclusion of a portion of the Allenton district. Objections had to be lodged by March 12th. Mr E. Houston''said that the Upper Ashburton Rdad Board had passed a resolution objecting, to - the proposed boundary. He moved that the Council do the same. Personally he objected to the inclusion of any part of Allenton in the borough, and also to the boundaries being "butchered" in the manner suggested. Mr Lill saad that the Council had not received any objections from ratepayers. iMr Houston stated that the leader of the petition said that £950 had been collected in rates, dog taxes, and scavenging in Allenton, and the Council had . only spent £450. He did not know where the figures came from; but they were WTong from beginning to end. Mr A. Horsey seconded the motion. He said the people were quite satisfied under the Council. He did not want to see the district cut up in the manner suggested. They had gone out of their way to include the woollen mills in the new boundaries. Mr J. Carr said a formal, objection wbuld be a step in the right direction. The motion was carried. Magistrate's Court. Only civil business was dealt with by Messrs W. H. Bundle and E. F. Nicoll, J.P.'s, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Judgment for, plaintiffs by default, with costs, was given in each of the following cases:—Bishop and Co. v. J. JEn connexion with the drainage of the Isleworth Settlement, the Minister for LandS (the Hon, E. A. Bansqm) wrote* to' the Ashburton County yesterday stating that he understood the matter had been the subject of discussion between the Commissioner of Crown Lands and the Council. It had been suggested that the best method ' ,was by the formation of a special drainage district; .When the chief drainage engineer of Jthe Lands Department inspected the r area in 1928 ho considered th& this waß the most economical course for the area concerned. The (government, therefore, did . not consider it advisable to undertake reBponsibility for the work. The Canterbury Progress i League wrote stating, that it had received a copy of the Ashburton County Council's engineer's report on the question .and everything possible would be done in furtherance of the Council's proposal that some-action might be taken through the unemployment' schemes. During a discussion on the unemployment problem.'Mr W. G. Gallagher moved that the drainage bo undertaken under the unemployment', scheme. .Mr G, Kelly .said that the men could be put on at only tho cost of'transport to the Council. An overseer ably'have to be employed. ,Mr A. A, Fooks (county engineer) suggested that they should write to the farmers on the settlement asking if they would be .prepared to accommodate any of the men. Mr Gallagher said that the Unemployment Board should provide camps for the.men on'work of that nature. ' It w&s agreed to leave the matter.iu"' she hands of the Progress League ,the meantime, the engineer to make preliminary investigations, including the prospects of billeting. ' Unemployed Belief Work. The - class of work on which unemployed in the Ashburton county are being engaged was discussed at the County Council meeting yesterday. .. In his report the chairman (Mr H. C. 8.. .Withejl) said that the number of men out of work at 'this time of the year- was unprecedented, string Febru- " ary, the Council found work for 57 men and for the current week 97 men would have to be arranged for. That number would' increase to , 117 the following week. , Organisation and- supervision of the men' was causing a great deal of extra for 1 the Council's ■ staff; but as the wbrk being done by the unemployedTmen was of a useful nature, the Council was- receiving value for the j work ehtailed. • If over ,100 men were out of work at this'time of the year, what w6uld be the position in 'the winter? -Messrs W. G. Gallagher apd W. T. Lill, commented adversely on the class of work on "which men wfere being enj gaged in Tinwald during 'the past few I days. The men were .doing work on the | road that could be dona with a horse and I scoop, in a third of the time. The work I was not necessary and was unproductive. ■ "If we are going to engage men r-on this unproductive work we are runi ning_ straight to bankruptcy," declared 'Mr »Lill. The men should be set to work improving' the land. Mr "J, Carr, said that the Unemployment Board had a difficult task in finding ,wark for men to avoid "pacing sustenance. ' 5 Mr G. Kelly (County Clerk) said that' the Council was providing transport for 1 sending men out" to clear up reserved qvery day/ .Work was being done on the main road. Useful work, in clearing ■ drains would be Undertaken at; St&veley* Mr A. Horsey said that the, schemes were ra, wonderful relief to the Hospital Board, there being less demand for charitable aid. ' Good . work could be , done at Hakatere, the mouth of the Ashf river, to .provide ' protective works against river efosipn. ' r Mr J. Moore said that the TJnem- [ plpymenlßoard,
a little more than 15s per week, for single men, and 25s for married men to go on to farms. , ?elly suggested that farmers should offer to subsidise, Bay,.from 5s to -10s per week, for men to go on to the farms. The Main Highways Board had notified the Council tba-t the period of the loan t% G P avin S work, between Ashburton and Dromore had been reduced from 10 to 7 years, as the work was to consist of three-coat seal work. No indication was given as to when the work would commence. The engineer (Mr A. A. 'Fooks) reported that with the chairman and Cr. Horsey he _ had inspected the serious position which had arisen owing to the erosion of the south bank of Taylor's stream a short distance above the Boxborough bridge. The river had scoured! aWay the south branch of the river and threatened* to change its course and cross the approach to the bridge. Bansom) wrote stating that he could not agree to the exchange of a portion of Crown Lands reserve 1775, alongside the Ashburton cemetery, for an area of 37 acres recently purchased, by thq Council at Valetta, because the Public Eeserves Act laid down that any land being obtained by the Department in exchange for a reserve must be more suitable for the purpose of such reserve and of at least equal value. The Mt. Hutt Boad Board asked for the support of the Council in its protest against the action of the Public Works Department in handing over control and of the Double. Hill Buns road to the Boad Board. As the Council had control of the bridges, in the county, it was an interested party. The Boad Board could not accept the responsibility of the rond, but was agreeable to contribute a sum annually to its upkeep. The total care and responsibility wepe far beyond the Board's limited: means. - s It was decided to write asking the i Public Works Department who woujd be responsible for the upkeep of the bridges if the road was passed over to the Mt.
