A large proportion of the wheat and barley crops which were sufficiently late to benefit-from the rains ' after the succession of January nor'westers ceased are giving much better returns than those reaped before the end of January. Within the last few days, a number of wheat yields of 50 bushels and over have been reported. One paddock threshed on the Canterbury Seed property returned CO. bushels to the acre, and* an earlier one just oii 40 bushels. All the barley on the firm's Leeston farms, some of which is only now being reaped, appears ; to ! be good) a,nd the same remark applies Ito the late "barley generally. Mr J. i Legg obtained 85 bushels to the acre from one paddock of barley, and all his i cereals have done well. It is noticeL able that the crops have thrived much I better in those places where there has 'been shelter from the nor'-westers. One of the. heaviest fields of wheat in the Ellesmere district has lately been .reaped on Mr D. Marshall's, farm near Leeston. Appearances suggest that it may yield anything from 70 to 80 bushels.
