A GENERAL PROTEST, OVER 500 STUDENTS AFPECTSP* United protest from the ft>ur ■ U&i* versity Colleges against the 'restrictions impospd by the Government on. the amount of fees payable on behalf of bursary holders will bff Jttada if the 'sugi gestion of'the chairman of the Canter- , bury College !Poard> of • Governors, tho Hon. G. J. Smith, is' acted upon by the other colleges. 1 The of authorities interviewed yesterday was that the change watt .unjust in that it had not been announced until plans had been made for the year both by students and the. colleges, and both had committed themselves to certain expenditure for the year. The restriction applies equally r tp. au forms of bursary, engineering, architectural, agricultural, home-ecience, educational, and to Training College students, according to a telegram' received yesterday by tho Eector of Canterbury College, Dr. J. Hight. The position now is, not that the amount of fees payable under the bursaries is reduced, £jf<l?n, to £lO, but that the Government will pay only half these fees with a mum payment of £lO. * ' .■ Hardship Likely. _ ' The new statement of the terjns ( Of the reduction moaftfl thatno bursary holder, no matter bow timaU'. the .total amount of fees payable by him, can have the whole, sum payabje -Spy ' bursary, In the' case of a ta^t" ing two 1 pass. grade arts/subjects (the
