ANNUAL MEETING. * Activities by the .New Zealand Society of Accountants in the direction of legislative and regulation amendment to the Companies Act were the' subject of comment by the president of the society, Mr W. D„ Revell (Timaru), at the twenty-second annual meeting, held in Wellington recently. He referred to the work being done by; the committee set up by the At-torney-General for the purpose of reporting on the proposed amendments] to the Act. The - committee, he Baid, had undertaken a work of some magnitude. When the Bill came forward it would be comprehensive and would do much to eradicate the weaknesses of the present Act, which had become out of date, and in urgent need of amendment. The question of a joint guarantee fund with the New Zealand Law ■Society was discussed. f "This matter has been before the executive and the council on several occasions since the convention last February," said Mr Reyell. "The question is now before the Law Society for discussion, but caanot be dealt with by them till they meet in March next. The proposal is fraught with some difficulties, btit failing satisfactory arrangements being come to with, the Law _ Society, the council will consider the question and endeavour to draft a" satisfactory scheme for a separate fund."
It was reported that the year had ended with an.excess of expenditure over income of £295 16s Bd. New councillors were elected as follows: —Messrs A. M. Seaman (Auckland), W. H. Irvine (Poverty Bay), James Hogg (Qtago), J. Mawson Stewart (Canterbury), C. H. Wynyard (Taranaki), and H. Valentine (Wellington). Mr E. W. A Kellow (Wellington) was re-elected auditor. , Meeting of Council. , At the half-yearly meeting of ihe Council held recently in Wellington, the following were present:—Messrs W. D. Revell, president (Timaru), J. M. Elliffe, vice-president, A. M. Seaman, H. C. 'Robinson (Auckland). H. liaiiy, ,C. H, Wynyard (New Plymouth), L. A. Denton (Hastings), R. Davis (Palmerston North), J. I. Griffin, E W. Hunt H. Valentine (Wellington), W. A. Smith, J. Mawson Stewart (Christchurch), James Hogg, G. W. Reid, J. W. Smeaton (Dunedin), and J. B Reid (Invercargill). Five new members were elected. Mr A. Stewart (Christchurch), and five other members were advanced to the status of Fellow Public Accountants. Assistance in the cost of tuition in commercial subjects was granted to the Technical Schools at Hamilton, Timaru,-and Palmerston North. A resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the devising of a policy for handling the problems arising out of the earthquake disaster was a mntter of urgency and prime national importance, and necessitated , placing expert advice.. at ■ the disposal of the Government. In that connexion, the Society offered the services of its president* .in an honorary advisory capacity. -
I jMr _J. M. EHiffe, of Auckland, was I elected president for the ensuing year I and Mr W. A. Sjjnith, of Christchurch, was elected vice-president. The Council endorsed the principle of a voluntary scheme for adjustments between mortgagee mortgagor and lessor and lessee, and will, if necessary, set up a special committee to consult or, co-operate with the .special committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.
