President Hoover added another to his iaoreftldlng list of vetoes of important Republican Party measures, when he returned to-day to Congress, without approval, a measure for the Government operation l . of the Muscle Shoals hydroelectrio and nitrate fertiliser project in Alabama, which was begun as a war lneasure l jMr Hoover condemning the principle of 'Government in business. He accompanied the veto with a lengthy and minute analysis of- the engineering and cost involved. He pointed out that the undertaking required an outlay of dollars, of which IpOjOOQjOOO dollars >vould be required from the Treasury immediately, and the entire enterprise would entail approximately 2,000,000 dollars annual loss. The statement concluded.: "1 am firmly opposed to the Government entering any business the purpose of which is competition with pur citizens. It is tho negation of the ideals On which our oiviUiatidn ig placed. ■ I hesitate to the future of our ' institutloni, our Government, and our country if the preoccupation of its officials be no longer the promotion of justice and equality of Opportunity, but be devoted to barter in markets. That is not Liberalism, it is degeneration." The measure is not expected to command sufficient support for repassaee over the . Veto.
