Levels County Council. _ The monthly meeting of the Levels County Council was -held yesterday. Present: The chairman. (Mr T. B, Garrick), and Messrs R.,G. Cleland, D. Grant, T. W. Brosnahan, G. D. Selbie, and C, E. Kerr. The chairman, in the ■ course of his statement, said that ; when accounts .amounting to £4318 were - paid, ■ there would be a debit, balance of £3061 12s. • Highway Beconstruction. In reply to a ldfcter from the Council, the Treasury Office, Wellington, wrote 'stating that the Main Highways Board had now decided to advance the Council its share of the cost of reconstructing the Christchurch-Dunedin main j highway, the term of the advance to be seven years, >with interest at 5J per cent, per annum. The", Highways Board also advised that the- amount wh}ch it proposed to borrow (£1230) represented the County's- share of the proportion .of work on the Timaru-Aro-whenua section only, and as tenders would be invited during the present month for sealing this sectiofc, at an estimated coßt of £6OOO, the Council's share being £ISOO, it was suggested that the amount to be yineluded in the proposed authorising Order-in-Council should be increased to £2730. The Treasury Office desired to know if the Council would agree to this suggestion, in .which case an Qrder-W'Gounoil would be prepared, authorising the borrowing of the latter .amount for a, term of seven years, with interest at 5} per cent, per annun:. WAIMATE. Mr G. E. Bray, president, presided at a meeting of the Waimate Amateur Boxing Association. Several boxers wrote asking to bo matched in Waimate, but it was decided to hold over all such considerations in the meantime. ' Several accounts were passed for payment. The annual picnic of the Temuka District High School is being held this year at Waimate, and takes place today in Victoria Park. The concert given by the Salvation Army Band in the Waimate Public Hospital grounds on Sunday afternoon was much enjoyed by both patients and visitors. Ensign C. A. Thomas, the conductor, has the band in good trim* now.

The monthly meeting of the Waimate School Committee was presided over by the chairman, Mr W. F. George, there being a good attendance. The secretary reported having recommended that trenching and drainage would be suitable works to be carried out under the No. 5 scheme of the Unemployment Board., The Education Board had supported the scheme for the preparation of the agricultural plots under the same scheme. The Board had asked' to be advised as to how many men would be required and for what length of time. The Canterbury Education Board wrote intimating that the assistant architect of the Board had been given authority to have eleven cast-iron washbasins at the school re-enamelled.

The headmaster, Mr D. C. Brown, reported that the roll number was 593, compared with 563 at the same period last year. Th 6 attendance and the health of the children were good. The committee passed a vote of thanks to all who gave donations towards providing tickets for children to attend the picnic. It was also decided to thank Mr D. Newall for his efforts in collecting sufficient money to send 110 children to the picnic. Thanks were also tendered to the donors of tro- ; phies and to Messrs F. Allington and, W. D. Paterson for the assistance given, on the day of the picnic. The chairman announced that Mrs H. Broken-, shire had won the prize for most dren attending the picnic, with nine children present. It was resolved to rote £1 Is to the Salvation Army Band in "recognition of its services at the picnic;. '

The Woodwards reported ;that one brother had been declared off the funds since last meeting, and one had been declared on, there being seven still on. A motion of sympathy was passed with the victims of ihe earthquake disaster. P.C.R. Bro. Hoskins, delegate to the United Friendly Societies' Council, reported on the last meeting of the Council. One candidate was initiated into the Order by the Chief Banger, Bro. IL Bishop, P.C.K., giving the charge. A donation of £2 2s was made to the Earthquake Belief Fund. Aocounts amounting to £6s 8s 6d.were paßßed for payment. ! ■ At the sitting "of the Magistrate's Court, Messrs Geo. Dash'and'W. Geddes, JJPv's, /presided. For driving an unregistered car, Bobert Frederick Heflsell, of. Waitaki hydro-electric works, was fined 20s and costs. Arthur Edwin Kilworth, for riding a motor-cycle with an insufficient silencer on the exhaust, was convicted and fined £3 and costs, < James William Woods, market gardener, .of Morven, was charged - with stealing -a 4<£gallon of petrol, valued at. £4 Bs, the property of Albert Avery Coulbeck. Sergeant Turner conducted the case for -the police, and Mr. W. Boland) who appeared :for accused, entered .a plea of not guilty. Evidence for ihe police was given by A. A. Coulbeck, ArthurBrfrgosa (an employee of Coulbeek's), Constable. Marsh, and Constable-' McGettigan, the. last two giving evidence of finding drum of petrol buried on Woods's property.
