CANTERBURY COUNCIL. VNATIONAL SHOW DISCUSSED.

A preliminary discussion regarding the arrangements for a National Show,' | to be hold in connexion with the annual conferences of the-Institute of 1 Horticulture, the Nurserymen's Associaj tion, and the Superintendents of ParkS I and Gardens, which to bo held in Christchurch next January, was the I principal business at last night's meet-, ing of the executive-of the Canterbury Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. The meeting was attended by Messrs. T. D. Lennio (chairman), 0. E. Foweraker, H. L. Darton, W. J. Humm, James Young, J. N. McLeod, B. G. Goodwin, M. J. Barnett, D. Cornbridge, and H. Firman (hon. secretary). The Domipion secretary (Mr A. RStone) wrote that in accordance with a decision of the conference, life membership cannot, in future, be 'granted to corporations. The decision was not retrospective. <

The Recent Conference. The chairman, referring to the conference of the Institute held in Wellington in January, said that he was very disappointed with the way the conference was carried out. It opened at 2 p.m., and rose at 5 p.m. His disappointment was due to the very quick-method in which the chairman put the busi' ness through; he erred on the side of speed. It gave one the feeling that one had to move a motion and say as little as possible. Even old hands .were _re--duced to a state of nervousness. The chairman took occasion to remind one or two delegates that they were speaking too long. It was a splendid thing for a chairman to hold a meeting and push it, but delegates were scared to get up and oppose a motion' becausp of the atmosphere instilled by the chairman. . . „■■ Mr Barnett: One or two delegates could have condensed their remarks; and many others had no necessity to ?be so long-winded. Tlfe chairman, after referring to tne remits that were carried, said that, speaking generally, • the conference had been a decided success, with the exception of, the little defect mentioned. The conferences (horticultural, nurserymen* and parks and gardens superintendents) were to be held in January, 1932, in Christchurch. '

National Show. The National Show at "Wellington, the chairman continued, had been a g r success, and he saw no reason why Christchurch should not do as . gopd next year..They would\have to enlist the assistance of the various _ horticultural societies and make a special effort. By that time the Canterbury Horticultural £| ciety would be affiliated. .Mr Barton: Quite possible. , Mr Barnett, said that with tlie .assistance of all the horticultural societies the show could equal, if not excel, the Wellington show. Mr Firman said that every, effort should be exerted to make the, show a success; they had the enthusiasm, the material, and the brains to; make it a success. It would be an advertisement for all concerned, and would put Christchurch on the map. Mr Barnett: It's already on the 1 mapt ■ Mr McLeod said that the only difficulty in Christchurch would.be to get a hall big enough, f There was-likely to be a big show of alpine plants, which would Tequire a_ few hundred feet 'lt had Been suggested- that marquees might be provide(L -in^ttlie, Botanic Gardens, but he did not know how the Domains Board would -look upon the proposal. Mr Young did not v . think there wotild be any objection. Mr McLeod said., thak it" would'-be th,e best-way out of the, difficulty, as there could be a marquee for each section. A great many more people would" ko to the Botanift Gardens than to a hall. ' - ' " . A - The chairman said tliat'-in respect of fruit and vegetables ,could improve on the diow, which had been purely-a flor&l dWplay." : ~ Mr McLeod said^jthat' they should, endeavour to get the" Lodder' Cup 'qbinpetition at' Wellington /were agreeatfte.
