luncheon party. Lady Baden-Powell, Chief Guide, who, with her husband, the Chief Scout, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning, was the guest of honour at a luncheon party given by Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson, Provincial President of the Girl Guides in Canterbury. The pleasant gathering, which followed, the civic reception accorded the distinguished visitors,' was held at a private reception room at Ballantyne s, where large bowls of delphiniums and'•red hot pokers" were used for the effcctivo decorations, while on the table were arranged bowls of beautiful shaded rosea. •' Mrs Cracroft Wilson extended a very cordial welcome to Lady Baden-Powell, whose visit, she said, gave great pleasure to Girl Guides throughout the Dominion and would 'have a stimulating effect on the movement. AUTUMN FOURSOMES.: , The autumn foursomes golf ipatcli will be played, this year, at the 4 Shirley'links on April 14th, 15th, and 16th. TENNIS PARTY, At "Daresbury," Fendalton,. the home of Miss D. Humphreys, a return tennis match, married versus single, was played yesterday afternoon. The annual match between these two teams was played at the home of Mrs Leonard Clark, Thorrington street, last week, when the single ladies proved superior. So enjoyable were the games, that it was decided to try conclusions again yestferday, when onoe again, the married ladies suffered defeat. The players, who were the guests of Mips Humphreys at tea. were Mesdames Leonard' Clark, R. H. Hennah, Geoffrey Kingscote, H. Kitson, George Buchanan, J. W. Woodhousa, Gerald Anderson, J. L. Findlay, Misses Humphreys, Harley, Cracroft Wilson, Sylvia Fox, Cora Wilding. Betty Cotterill, Isabel Turrell. and Ruth WynnWilliams.

WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION. The monthly meeting of the Linwood branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Church, Mrs Richards presiding. Mrs Greenwood led the devotions. A motion of sympathy with the sufferers in the earthquake disaster was carried. Airs Anderson -reported on the Cradle Roll picnic held recently. Mrs Brewins gave a scientific temperance fact. Being "Frances Willard Day" an address on the "Life and Work of a Missionary?.' was given by-Mrs W. Francis, and a collection for the world's missionary fund was taken. A vote of thanks was passed to the speaker. Mrs Brewins .was appointed delegate t" the Dominion Convention to be held at Nelson in March. Mrs Gilbert, was nominated as a candidate for the North Linwood School Committee. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with prayers.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. r An enjoyable dance was held at "Rockvilla," Sumner, the home of Mr and Mrs S. 11. Hickmott, to celebrate the 21st birthday of Mr John Fraser, Mrs Hickmott's brother. During the evening the young people danced on the balcony and sun porch, which were gaily festooned with streamers and Japanese lanterns. The drawing-room was decorated with mauve and pink hydrangeas and fern and the dining-room, where supper was served, was gay with pink asters.
