last three remain in exactly the aarae order. Miss Andrew, the Canterbury •champion of 1930, has played verydiaappointingly, chiefly because her profession allowed' her insufficient tine' for practice. Miss Wake showed a more versatile game, but after suffering a sun-stroke at* the New Zealand' Championships she has rarely ehown her best form. ■ • " Max'i 3)<mblea. r jOotober 81st. 1. 0. doubles list in the last few weeks of the season. Misses Johnston and Sherris defeated the Canterbury champions, Mioses Wake and Andrew, , who thereupon retired'because of Miss Andrew's absence on holiday. On the last day, the Misses Johnston and Sherris were in turn beaten by Misses Gould and Macdonald, a strongs pair who, had a surprise win over Misses .Wake and Andrew in the New Zealand championships. Mesdames Miles and 'Peppier have,.fallen from first' place' t6 fourth, being now below Mrs, Stedman and Miss Saunders, who were originally sixth,. Misses Goss and Rudkin have moved up at the expense of Misses . 'Morrison 'and Sowden, and Misses! Reed and Blackwell are-still' at, the ! bottom. Misses Johnston and Sherris and Misses Gould* and Macdonald' a?e r two most promising pairs who have sitinro consistent improvement, throughout the season, chieffy because they play all thei)r matches together. At their best, Misses Woke ana Andrew qowld probably beat either of them, but this pair l hare not once been at the& best during the season. • i „ Men'sSopplsmeniUry list. Qotob'er 81st. ' Invitation to Japan/ „ At its meeting last Friday, the Conn;cil' of the sNew .Zealand Lawn Tennis Association stated'its approval of the I action of the Management Committee in inviting the Lawn Tennis Association of Japan to send a representative tennis team to tour the Dominion. Mr S. B. Gstoith,' who presided, said that he had had ' the pleasure of meet&g the Japanese players at Wimbledon during the recent visit to England. If, a 'Japanese team visited the Dominion, itwould have thq effect of greatly improving tenuis in this ' country, and would also ■do much to further international goodwill, which he contended it was .the duty of all sports bodies to foster#-* , . I, In-reply to Mr G. Gore, the secretary (Mr D, Murray Kean) said that nothing further had been heard concernI ing a visit to the Dominion of an American team of professional players. Junior Tournament. At the same meeting, the Association's council decided that ..it "would be inadvisable to hold f a junior hard-court tournament this year on account of, the' financial depression. On behalf of the Management Committee, and in accordance with notice; Mr A. G. -Henderson's' motiorft "That a New Zealand juniors' hard-court championships tournament be'held in May, 1931, under the'cbndiadopted >y tjie Council at the meeting held on November 27th, 1930," was lost hy 19,427 votes to 3893. Mr G. Gore said that the in acquainting associations of the decision, should' explain that +he reason for turning down Ifche proposal to' hold i'a junior' tournament- this year was solely on Account of the economic depression, j ,Mr"W.£. Watson considered'that the Council should ,get Jjusy,' aid not allow the idea of a national junior hard-court tournament, to be shelved indefinitely. Mr .ft. girl of ■ promise was'not' sent to the national championship meeting, *it was the' fault of the' local and not of the parent body. '■ ■ Forthcoming Tournaments. j ' The CanterbrtyiAnociation has issued entry-forms for the twp 1 late-seaaon championship and handicap tournaments. The Easter "tourney will be played" at Wilding Park from April 4th, the championships on grass and the'handicaps • on- asphalt. There are the live senior, championship events and the junior singles. <ln the handicaps there are -firsthand second, grades in the men's and "women's' singles ''and, in the mixed' doubles. Entries close on March 19th. r What has previously been:known,as the Suburban" tournament and now has the title: "1930-31 Inter-Olub Champiouship and' Handicap Tournament, w will be playe&at Wilding Park on Saturday, Match 14th, and on Saturday following.
