AMBERLEY EWE FAIR.

I ' ' AUCKLAND. [ Sales on 'Change—n _ - J

A DR;kjAGGING SALE. TOP TWO;-TOOTH PRICE 15/6, :| The North Canterbury, ewe fairs were anticipated. ,tl4s yißariwthi an- uousudl amount. of interest,, as since last Fair Values have 1 dropped, into the melting pot. It was Hoped that 'when a, selection of good slieep was offered to farmers, such.' as the Amberley Fair provides, the demand would' have' been. stimulated, . and that Addin'gton | parity,' at least, would" have been maintained. ■; .Howeyeiv this. expecta-' tion was, not .realised. For two-tooths the difference on that market would, j be covered'by Is to ls 6d a head, but for the older sheep, considering • the' comparative quality, r it. was, \ slightly more. Over the earlier stages buyers-' competed with extreme caution, and many, good drafts of two-tooths, brought only a degree more than ord-, inary lots. Later ori in the sale, when, the two-tooth, disposal was v nedring" a conclusion," there was a more spirited demand, and some lots showed an improvement of u;p to Is 6d" a? head. There was, however, much irregularity, but anything in the way of fancy prices for special lines of sheep was i entirely absent. The demand was practically all from farmers, only occasional lines going to dealers. Though the gathering of farmers was large,' it was not so representative as usual of the whole of the province. The sheep did not come forward m as good condition as at last Fair. Except for the classier lines the twotooths showed some unevenness, and a number of the drafts included a larger proportion of undersized sheep, due. doubtless, to tne erratic spring and bad season for feed. Some very good drafts of 4-yeiir ewes were forward,- and' it • was a new experience at the Fair to see these sheep selling at-7s- and Bs, not much more than a third of. a. year ago, ana a fourth of two years ago. : • Vendors accepted • the market, only a few pens over ■ the earlier part or the. siile being , passed. The entry showed a considerable reduction in numbers on , last.
