DANCE HALL.
RIdCARTON PROJECT. ! !,Vl COUNCILLORS AND BUILDING . PERMIT. The possibility that an application for » building permit to erect additions, 65ft by 30ft, to a supper room in premises in Deans avenue, might mean that it was intended to conduct.a, dance ; hall there, agitated the minds of mem- i bers of' the Bicoarton Borough Council! last evening, when the Town Clerk (Mr i i B, Sarjeant) mentioned the application ! i at the. close of the other business of i the. meeting. 'ln the course of the past year application was made by the own-1 era of the aanie property for a'licens'e* for a dance hall, but there was a petition of ratepayers against it, and the Council did not give the license. • . Mr Sarjeant stated that he did nott know whether the purpose of tfce appli-'. i cants was to provide a dance-hall, aftdI later apply for a "license, but he did not the Council had the power to refuse the building permit. . The May6r (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.):, As long as they did "not ms£s a jnuisajico.of any dance hall there could.bo no objection to it. Cr. B. G. Malcolmson: If a license was given an officer of the Council could go at &ny time to see that the place was conducted properly. 1 AS any license/would be .for 12 months only,, it would hot be likely that the owners' would permit any nuisance, for that would remove asy hope of a renewal. As far as • I can-- see, the, present arrangement is to cater for wedding parties and so on. ■Cr. O. D. Fraser: Yet 185 ratepayers petitioned against the licensing of a dance hall there 1 > The other Councillors present, who examined the plans, were of the opinion that the extensions for which a permit was asked, were, really of the nature of a dance hall. No .action was taken in the matter, which was merely mentioned to the Council for information by the .Town Clerk before taking action irt the matter of the building permit.
