At a formal meeting last evening the Eiccarton Borough Council approved of tho electoral roll for the forthcoming borough elections. The Mayor (Mr 11, S. S. Kyle, M.P.) and Crs. W. Machin and B. G. Malcolmson were appointed to sign the roll as required; by Statute. The Department of Lands and Survey having informed the City Council that the Beckenham, Sproydon, Bichiriond, and Cashmere Hills Domains Boards had been amalgamated under the title of the Christcliurch City and Suburban Domains Board, the Council, which constitutes the Board) sat in that capacity last night and transacted a certain amount of formal business.
Good progress is being made with the Construction of the new bridge over the Avon river at Seaviow road, New Brighton. It was reportod to the City Council last night by tho Watar Supply and Works Cominittco that it had instructed the City Engineer (Mr A. B. Galbraith) to call for tenders for the erection of the tram shelters in Cathedral square in accordance with the plans submitted to, and approved by, the Christchurch Tramway Board.
It was claimed at a meeting of tho New Brighton Borough' Council last evening that the borough was doing its share in providing work for unemployed men. The Mayor, .MrJ. . H.. Shaw, mentioned that 80 men had been em* ployed last week under ■ the Unemployment Board's No. 5 Scheme, and that indications were that the Council would be able spon to employ 100 men.
A by-law prohibiting the owner, 'driver, or conductor of a vehicle required to be licensed from touting for fares, or, for tho purpose of advertisement of any trade or business, using, on or near a street, "any musical instrument, gong, drum, bell, gramophone, megaphone, dr loud-epoaker," without permission in writing from the 'Council, was passed at last night's meeting of the City- Council. The by-law will 1)6 confirmed at a subsequent meeting.
