IDRIS ROAD.

IMPROVEMENTS DESIRED. PETITION TO CITY COUNCIL. „ Mr W. E. "Ward and 29 other reßiv dents and ratepayers in Idris road, 'between Bligh'B road and Wairarapa road, Bryndwr, forwarded' a petition to last night' 6; meeting, of the Christchurch City Council, praying that improvements be carried out to the street' on the grounds that:—(a) They had ! been paying rates to the City since 1924. - (b) During the intervening period those rates had been increased 400 per cent. (c) They still had the same unformed paths and no channelling, while the road itself was in a very rough state, nothing of importance in the manner of improvements having been carried out. (d) The road wasin many respects a main highway, as traffic leading to Addington, Fendalton, Eiccarton, and other surrounding parts of the-City, passed along it. (e) The Tramway Board bus made twenty trips daily along the road. (f) In contrast to that, they quoted the work .done by the Waimairi County Council, from whoso jurisdiction they seceded in order to join the City, viz., the streets in the area governed by the County Council and bordering on the ro«d mentioned had been tar-sealed, the jfaths had been properly formed and channelled, and in many places asphalted. The petitioners further suggested that advantage should be taken to have the work done under the .Unemployment Act.

Health Department's Action. Cr. E. H. Andrews said that the Health Department had prevented the Council from channelling the street, and prevented a loan been raised. He hoped that the Works Committee would see that the petition - was given' effect to, and he moved the matter be referred to that committee. • r

The motion was seconded by Or. D. <>. Sullivan, M.P., who suggested that si .special rating aroa might be created in order to enable the work to be gone on with. r

Cr.J,W. Beanland said that in the past special rating areas ■ had \been created in other districts, so that channelling work should- be- done. ■ would be wrong to tar-seal a road before it was channelled, and it would be unfair to treat this district differently from othera. > The Council could not show preference to the Idris road district. Cr. C. I!. Jones said that he .understood'that tar-sealing did not extend oyer whole width of a road, in. consequence of which it would not be to channel the street* first. The motion was carried.
