. . . ASHBURTON. CONSTABLE ASSAULTED.

Before Messrs B. Clark and A. H. Fenn, J.P. 's, at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday, Henry Blackwell, a mill hand, was charged with assaulting Constable J. E. R. Myers while executing his duty, and also with resisting arrest, being drunk, and damaging car upholstery, valued at &1 15b, the property of William Rankin. Accused, who was represented by Mr G. C. Nicoll, pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Senior-Sergeant H. Martin said that accused wa? employed on a mill He was found at the rear of business premises in Tancred street on Sunday night. Blackwell • was drunk, and violently kicked Constable Myers. He resisted arrest, and Mr Rankin's car was requisitioned. Accused damaged a curtain and upholstery in the car. , Constable Myers -said that accused was fighting drunk. While walking along hb suddenly hit out at witness's face with his! fist, and kicked witness on the leg. He had a bottle of beer in his possession. For the defence, Mr Nicoll said that drink was the cause of, the trouble, and accused, who did not know what he was doing, was willing to take out a prohibition order. If he was impris* oned he would lose his job on the mill. The Bench said that accused's record was not very good. It took a serious view of the assault upon the constable, and could not hold that drunkenness; was an excuse. < Accused would be sentenced to one month'S imprisonment without the option of a fine on that charge. Blackwell was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, while for resisting arrest be was oidered to pay f 1 15s damage and 2s 6d car fare. -

Past Grands' Lodge. A Past Grands' Lodge in connexion with the Ashburton District, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held On Saturday night, when there were thirteen candidates for the Purple Degree. The degrees were conferred by District Grand Master Bro. A. E. Soal, assisted by DeputyDistrict Grand Master Bro. H. D. Gunn and Past District Grand Master Bro. J. F. Donaldson, As lecture master of thS' Loyal Ashburton Lodge, Bro. C. M. Innos conferred the Past Officers' Degrees. It was decided to bring up the question of the formation of a Past Grands Lodge at the District Conference on March 21st.
