COUNTY COUNCILS.
AKAROA. .A. meeting of the Akaroa County Council was held last Saturday. Present: Messrs C. B.~Thacker (chairman), W. W. Williams, E. Hay, W. H. Taylor, A. McPhail, and B. Mould. The chairmap ■ referred to' the Hawke'a Bay earthquake disaster, and moved that » letter of sympathy be sent to the Mayors of Hastings and Napier. He also said that he had got into touch' with all the members of the Council, and had authorised the clerk to forward £IOO to the Napier relief fund, and that Mr W. (J. Vogan was canvassing Duvauchelle district for the same cause. The tender of Mr O. Gilbert to ta&e corners off at the top of Okain's Bay was accented. It was resolved not to accept a tender for a. Ford truck. Messrs Matson and Company wrote stating that they were taking out an auctioneer's license in the Akaroa County. It was decided to write-to several firms doing business on the Peninsula, asking them to take out licenses in the county. ( A letter ■ was received from the Counties Association advising that ' the executive would meet in April, and asking for • any suggestions to put before the executive. It was resolved to accept the Ocean Accident Insurance Company's cover of £425 on a Leyland lorry. • • The Waitaki Council wrote seeking support for a resolution to ask the Counties Association to call a conference of county delegates.—lt was decided to advise the Waitaki Council that the Council was of opinion that the best plan would be for' the Association's executive to meet and discuss matters. Mr Climio and Mr Scarff, of. the Unemployment Committee, waited on the Council regarding the problem of unemployment. Mr Climie outlined the various schemes of the Unemployment Board, and Mr Scarff also spoke on the question. The chairman thanked the speakers for attending. / A motion was carried that an Unemployment Committee ba set up, to consist of members of the County Council, the chaiTman of each Boad- Board, the postmaster, and county clerk, and that relief work wages be 10s 6d for single men and 12s a day for married men. > The Transport Department wrote concerning the appointment of testing officers under the new; motor-drivers' regulations. It was resolved to appoint , the county clerk, Mr E. Hay, and Mr W. O'Brien as testing officers.
