Playw&ve in the W&inoni Handicap. _Tho winner was seventeenth favourite in a field of nineteen, but his performances this season did not warrant his going 1 out at such a long price. Since August Ist last he had started sixteen times for a win and two thirds, all ver 3 r s J? a ' performances. At the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting in November he finished third to Somerby and Morrison In the Borough Handicap* after going a mile and five furlongs in 3min 40Bee about 2min 18iseo to the mile, and later In the day in the Wellington Handicap of a mile and a quarter he was second to Erin J a Pointer and Morrison in 2min 61'3-ssec, 2min 17sec to, the mile. Marshall received severe injuries to a foot and his back when Happy -kand fell with him in the final race at New Brighton on Saturday, and he will be confined to hospital for some days. Pre.vioUßly .to joining the light-harness .ranks, Marshall was well known as a rider of gallopers and was attached to T. H. Gillett's Riccarton stable.

A Penalty. For not confirming in writing the acceptance of Milo Minto for his engagement at Now Brighton on Saturday, O. E. Hooper was fined £2. Gk>od Speculation. Though not a single favourite won at New Brighton on Saturday the' totalisator investments showed an increaso op. the figures put through at the Club b January Meeting, 'ho Olub may swl have difficulty in making ends meet, but its position is a good bit better than that of most Clubs at present. Mr 3. Weßtermaa's Success. The New Brighton sportsman, Mr 1 J. Westerman, • was in luck's way on Saturday, when , his two four-year-oldd, Dusolina and Dollar King, gained first and socond places, in the Belfast Han* dicap, and a good double figure dividend, and later when Location won the Eclipse Handicap. All three were bred by their present owner, Drusus is the sire of both Dusollna and Dollar King, two promising young pacers. An Improver.

NEW BRIGHTON T.c.' rollo wins big race. A SENSATIONAL DIVIDEND. Favoured with almost perfect weather the New Brighton Trotting Club's Meeting on Saturday attracted a very good crowd, and first-class sport was the order throughout the day. Backers had one of thoir worst days, for not a single favourite was successful, and while one dividend, tapped the century, three others ran into double figures, Considering these! facts the tot'allsator business, was- particularly good, for the sum of £19,185 was put through the machine, as against £28,791 at the corresponding Meeting held in March last year, and £17,100 10s at the Club's last Meeting held on January 24th, The- track, though dusty, was in fair order, and fast tiniesf were the order of the day. Mr F. C. Thomas, as a result of his handicapping, contributed considerably the difficulties of speculators, yet provided most interesting racing. There Was some delay in getting: off the differont races and the last race was run after the scheduled time, but outside this, the Meeting was capably handled, and the secretary, Mr A. I. Rattray, had everything running smoothly, while the honorary officials carded out their various duties in approved manner. Details of the racing are as follows: —

NOTES ON THE RACING. Biddy Parrish Shows Form. E. Townloy's trottor, Iwimta, was made a warm favourite for the Improvers' Handicap, but it was probably more the reputation of the trainer than the trotter that caused the speculation. Iwanta hfcver looked dangerous. She broke at tho start, and made a lot of bad mistakes throughout the race. Sho Will need to improve a lot to' win in the near future. On the other hand, Biddy Parrish trotted soundly from start to finish, did not put a foot wrong, and won fairly easily. There was a good commission for tho maro at the finish of the betting, and this made her second favourite, Previous to the last ring Biddy, Parrish was paying a, doublefigur*! dividend, and on this showing Mr 'G. J, Barton's representative is a, very smart trotter and likely to win in still better company. Duco seems to like the New Brighton track and he went a solid race to finish second. Great Harvester lost ground in the early stages} but finished at a great rate. From, 72 yards, behind) his performance was a good one, Gift waa m front early, had every chance, but faded badly. Bell Heather was trotting well half a mile from home, but had had enough at the end.

A One-Dividend Bace. Netta Oro, , from F. G. Holmes's stable, was favourito for the Belfast Handicap, but again backers were left i lamenting through a bad beginning. , Vican essayed to make tho pace through- i out, and ho acted the part of pacci | maker well until the real business com- i menced. At this stage, Dollar King i and Dusolina tackled him and in a battle royal to the post Dtfyolina hung on wolj to gain a narrow victory. Both winner and runner-up are owned by Mr i J. AWstermnn but this did not stop both drivers from doing their best to snatch victory. Both winner nnd runner-up are by Drusus, and Dollar Princess, dam oil Dollar King, is grand-daw of Dusolina. Jt Was a stirring finish. Dusolina is iji good typo of' filly, and her condition reflected credit on her trainer, H. Ifrost. Dollar King, who ;had raced well Ut Kailtotira tho proviou's Saturday,, has probably bad enough racing, aiifl looked light. Vican, p, full-brother to £ great mare, in Vilo, fsd?d only over the last pact, but ho would need to hsvo been \ very good here# to have WOn making all tho-pace. JRuth. Logan covered some extra ground, yot a good race, and the. best of ttfb remainder way prove to, be Belle Lorimer, who, losing ground middle stages, put in a -detormtaed' finish;' Thfc tittle* flitin 88 froiha3mh\ 3?sm mark representee! ttnfcrt golttgi , . 1 with' the toftcketed' horses finishing fifst.and' seoond the dne-dividohd■, wo?kM, welliinto double figures.' . - , 80110 Improves. 1 - The Benton Memorial was a race in which , fortunes varied. Teremoa set out to make the pace -tfhile breaking by a number of horses interfered With Dillon Logan: Rollo, El "Direct, - -Jiilo Minto. and Editor, When "the , field settled down Tefemoa was. infront'--fro/a Sahib, Salient, and Sonoma, but very shortly ,T,onedos worked'l&to second place followed by Sahib, Dillon, Logan, who had made up lot, of ground, and 80110,, The last-named improved his position' rapidly bounding the top .turn, and when ' the straight was reached he was in a fighting position. In the run home 80110 was not seriously, troubled, although B, B. Berry had to keep him moving, and he won fairly comfortably at the finish. He is a much improved pacer' with good staying qualities. Kelp, nursed carefully throughout, came with a smart dash towards the finish and gained second money, but he will need a race run to suit him before ho pun win. over two miles. Teremoa hung on better than-was expected and Jolly Pet went a fine race to finish in fourth place. Milo Minto showed just enough dash to draw attention to Mb prospects iii the near future. Tenedos faded only in the last quarter of a mile, but Dillon Logan, after making up a .lot of ground, was .left without a final punch. Lady Cello was the best of the remainder, but several may be expected to show improved form before long.

1 H. Frost Again. j H. Frost produced his second winner of the day when with Location he took the: lead shortly after the start of the Eclipse Handicap and. led all the way to win in most impressive fashion. Location proved herself on this occasion a true racehorse and it was no mean offort on her part to win from a field that included a number of classy young horses. Thfl winner, though flighty at present, is no doubt a very speedy pacer, and she will win more rages before long. Belle Lorimer, making hor second appearance for the- day, .went a fine race, staying on,when tile majority had had enough, while Willie Derby badly placed in the early stages easily gained thfafd money. He is a smart } pacei*. Sister Hose began badly, but made j up heir ground rapidly, only, to tangle I three furlongs from home. Her recent j raeing does not seem to have done her j any good. Golden Harvest went i solidly all through, Oxford Queen faded ; out in the final stages but should do j better, and Lord Matchlight, when looking a possible place-getter, was pulled up owing to broken gear- j A Promising Paoer. - { The Dash Handicap sferved to introduce a very promising pafler in Maurice . Dillon from I\ 6. Holmes's stable. After ! Denver .City; Audrey Dillon* and Our

George had made the running for six furlongs, Maurice Dillon moved to the front and was not further troubled. He won in most impressive style, and his next appearance will be awaited with interest. He is a half-brother to a e°°d performer ia St. Maura, who, like Maurice Dillon, raced in the nomination of MrH. J, Delargey, Major Lind and Our George, who finished secondand third respectively, are imported horses, but neither has'as yet lived up to itß reputation. • Major Lind, however, may improve a good deal, and possibly both will be better suited by a dirt track. Tumatakura went a fair race and may do even better, but Denver City, who began with his usual brilliance, was beaten a long way from home. Millie de Oro upset her driver at the start, and in doing so interfered badly with Lily Harold, whose chances were extinguished. The time, 2min l§sec, from a 2min lSsec mark, represented very smart travelling.

St. Petro* Wins. The Autumn Handicap found backers well astray for Home Voyage and Wattle Patch, uolidly backed, never looked like Winners, It .was left to Bt. Petrox and Bepute to make most ttf the running and the former to stay on a lot better than he has usually done and to win very ; comfortably from Fifa. St. Petrox has not been generally regarded as a two miler, but on this occasion he was driven a most confident race by G. Oaddy and fairly played with the opposition at the finish. The time was not' fast and this was perhaps all in his favour, but such a hollow victory made the other starters look very poor class. Fifa, from 84 yards »behind, went a fine race and in her effort sho showed a lot of gameness and stamina. New Metford,. too, gave away long starts, but he seems a bit temperamental, and he was' beaten comfortably by both winner and runnerup. Homo Voyage showed speed in patches, but Wattle Patch broke several times. The form of all but the placed horse i was very poor.

A Huge Dividend. While not a favourite won during the day backers made their worst selections when they picked Great Author and the Proud Dillon-Eugene de Oro bracket to win the Wftinoni Handicap. It was left to Tactless to make most of the running, but he compounded in the straight when tackled by Playwavo, Sunny Bob, and Great Author. Playwave cam© away at the distance and staying on in good style he won by a length and paid his few supporters a dividend of over a century. Possibly the fact that E. Hawtin, the trainer, and practically an unknown driver, handled the gelding, was responsible for the big price, but performances certainly entitled him to much better sup* port. He was driven quite a good race and won on his merits in time very little bettor than he was handicapped to do. Sunny Bob went his best race for some time, and Great Author, after: being badly placed in the early stages, showed a lot of speed in the final stages. He would be better suited by a dirt track. Tactless faded out in the last couple of furlongs, and neither Proud Dillon nor Eugene de Oro ever threatened danger. .

Accident Spoils Bace. Festival was a warm favourite for the Electric Handicap, the best betting race of tho day, but at no stage did ho look like finishing in the money. Wild Voyage set out to \ win 1 from end to end, but just after entering the straight ho appeared to cross his legs, and lie came down, whUe a number or horses were interfered with in avoiding the smash. Happy Land/Who had broken soon after the start, put in ft fast run, but unluckily toppled over the fallen' horse. , Tho accident left Kate Logan oat Jn front, and she was not seriously troubled over tho last part, to win from an outsider, in Maearanda. Kate Logan paced nicely from start to finish, and while the accident made things easier for her, it is probable she wohld'have'Won under any conditions. Bhe has improved a good deal of- late. Krina waa pulled up when hopelessly out of the race, and over the last part the field wan well strung out. Tho time, Stttfn 13.2-Ssec from' a 2min lflsee mark was good. ,
