/ RANGIORA. . A meeting of the Ashley Riyer Trust was held on Friday evening. Present being Messrs F. Langbein (chairman), 11. D. Hutchison,, H, J. Benjes, C. S. Ayers, L. J. Stokes, Lindsay, and R. C. -Wright.. The secretary reported on the result of the Court case against Thomas Miles, the result being very satisfactory to the, Trust, it was decided to pay, the costs incurred in the case, amounting to £2O lis Bd. In connexion with an accident to a relief worker, the secretary reported that the insurance company had paid the full amount of the claim, amounting to £7. The treasurer reported a debit hank balance of £753 5s 9d. The receipts since last meeting were £32,10s 4d; acoounts amounting to £2 lis 9d were passed; In connexion with Mr Orchard's lease, it \yas decided to write to him that he must not issue any more permits for huts without the written permission of the Trust. The foreman, in reporting on the work of the month, said that relief workors had been employed pulling out and burning willows and also clearing water courses in the Sefton area. Breaches in the stop bank below the lower traffic bridge had boen attended to. The report was received. , The five years' lease of the Town Hall, hold bv the management _ ol Everybody's Pictures has expired, Saturday's screening being the last. At the conclusion of the programme, the manager, Mr 11. Sutton, entertained the staff at supper and expressed his appreciation of their services to the company. This was acknowledged by Mr lfl. Payne, who referred to the liappy relationship which had ■ existed between the management and staff. During the past week revival services have been conducted by Commandant and Mrs Lord, of the Salvation Army. A number of cottage prayer meetings have been held and special, services have also been conducted in tho. Army Ilall. The meetings haye been well attended and have resulted in fresh interest being taken in the work of the Army. A feature .of .-the week's activities was an address bv Staff Captain Dnvies on ''Seven Years' Work in the London Slums." ... The Rev. S. Henderson and -Mr S. Avers., who .liav© been attending the Mothodist Conference in Dunedin, returned to Rangiora on Saturday.
KAIAPOI: The children ot the Presbyterian Girls' Orphanage, Christchurch, were entertained at a picnic in the Kaiapoi Park, on Saturday afternoon by the Girls' Sunshino Club, of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Kaiapoi, when an enjoyable time was spent in tennis and games;. A collision between two cars, u sedan driven by Mr 1\ Williamson, Kaiapoi, and a five-seater, driven by MrW. J. Sellwood, of.Matsons road, Papanui, Occurred' on the Main North ; road, near Neaves road, about 6 p.m. on Saturday, fortunately-without injury to the occupants, of either car, although both! > cars were considerably damaged. .i, >■ The, concrete,road in tlje vicinity of Neaves road was the scene of another accident .ab0ut,2.30 on Saturday afternoon, when Mr (J. O'Connor, of Cass street,,. Kaiapoi,, was knocked oil his bioy.cle. through being struck ; by a.car driven by Mr F. Lowe, of Ashiey. jMr O'Connor suffered .shock and minor' injuries and after receiving medical attention was taken home. ; Tho Kaiapoi Bowling Club's singles championship was concluded last week and was ivon by Mr J. KAIKOURA.
There was a large attencknco at the committee meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Saturday afternoon, Mr It. 11. Laidlaw (president) presiding. Mr B. Naylor was elected,a member of the Association, Mr John I'nrlane (Halswell) advised that he, would accept the position of' judge of the .cattle section. Messrs D. T. Meekin and J. Keely applied for space at the show, which wlft granted on the usual conditions, and. it was decided toiapproach* the band regarding the playing of selections on Show Day. Stewards were appointed for the-vari-ous sections. The question of the sale of privileges was left to the president and secretary. I\lr Elliott (Fields Division) will inspect the field demonstrations. The Secretary was instructed to invito the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes to officially open the show. The "meeting was enthusiastic regarding the-prospeots of the show, the president . asking njembers to do all possible. to secure further entries. It was agreed ■to hold the usual smoke concert ,for the of entertaining the judges and visitors. A junior competition was included- for musical chairsi • wit,h :in age-liniit of fifteen years. ,
OXFORD. ' ■ The Oxford Women's Christian Temperance Union met in the Coronation Hall.iast week. . Mrs Hawke took the chair, as the president was unable to attend. A, resolution was passed-ex-pressing sympathy with aJI who suffered in the recent earthquake. ,It ,was decided to place on .the minutes an appreciation of, the valuable help given by the Rev.-D..R, and Mrs Turner during their residence in .-Oxford; and regret at their leaving the district. Letters were received from the president of the* Workers' No-License League, asking for co-operation in distribution of literature. \The question was deferred for further consideration. It .was "decided> to' send a delegate to the Dominion Convention. In response to the request* of- the Agricultural and Pastoral Society, 1 it was agreed to cater- for the forthcoming show next month. The flower mission department reported 29 visits. Miss Shirtnliffe, secretary of the Timaru branch of the League of Nations Union, brief but interesting account of the work of,the League, receiving a very hearty vote 'of thanks. As it was Malices Willard Day, a fine paper on the life and work of the founder of the W.C.T.U. was contributed by Mrs- Jones, superintendent of Notable' Days. Tt was decided to open the Band of Hope season in March. Mrs C. Morris resigned from- the committee, Mrs Gainsford, appointed in her place.
