- • Mr, Douglas Smith presided ■ over, an attendance of' about .• 2S members of the Sumner Burgesses' - Association on' i Saturday evening. Apologies for absence »•> were received from Messrs IIMacLachlan, D. Dunns, and E. - T* Chitty.' ■ Saying that his reason was the participation of the Association in local politics, Mr A. J.'Scott, a .former president, forwarded his resignation. The secretary-said that the past records ofs the Association showed' that it had * always interested 'itself in ' the Council* ■ elections,- and this being,so it< was .decided to' ask Mr-Scott' to reconsider hifi decision. < The treasurer reported accredit balance of £2 13s Bd. ■ , In accordance.'w,ith notice of motion ■ Mr* MacLachlan moved that,the Resolution, referring to .the setting up of a committee to consider ■ the» amalgama-. tion of Sumner • with 1 Heathcote be rescinded. with reference to joining the United Burgesses' Association. . . . There was considerable • discussion over the f orthoomin s. Council elections. Mr J/. Longton said that prospective, candidates' should be invited, to' address the members of the Association, and said that the matter of the roll and, the. . obtaining of . enrolment forms should not be overlooked. -v , ■ Mr J. Cock said that the" Redclitfs Burgesses' Association > should •be ■ consulted in connexion with the of candidates. He thought that the sAssociation should draw/ up a programme and that candidates should answer questions; He desired to know whether candidates would be in favour of spending a reasonable proportion of, the. rates; in each locality, and.whether candidates considered that 'there should be one guiding mind in the borough,, since at the preaentftimo, in his'opinion, there ■ was considerable - overlapping, and the plans of one man were thwarted by another.- , >. It was decided-that a special meeting be 'called 'for March 14tli for the purpose of receiving a final report from the; committee and to; select candidates' for the Council election.' , * ' Mr E.
