' I -A scene arose in the Honae o£ Com-, mona' over > the .10 per • cent.- cut in the civil* servants' cost of ;sving tonus, resulting in the suspension of Mr .W. J". Brown, who has previously criticised Mr Philip Snowden's policy of wage reduction, and who is one of Sir Oswald Mosley's Labour group.. - Mr Brown, pointing out that 300;000 members of tho Civil/Service, would be affected-; by'any-wage- cut, • demanded that the reduction should-not appty to those.earning less .than £4 a week. He then remained standing when the Speaker (Captain E. A. Fitzroy) asked him to sit down. ; ' Mr Brown was named for disobeying the Speaker and was suspended by . 296 votes to 17, the back bench Labourites forcing the division. ' - Mr F. A. Macquisten raised laughter/ by suggesting that members desiring suspension .Bhould inform the < Speaker in advance. Mr Brown' subsequently made a statement that he had no apology to offer, except to the Speaker, who had i been uniformly courteous. He- was i bound' to protest against' the wage cuts which had reduced wages. Mr Brown then gave examples of the. effects of the wage cuts, comparing some of the wageti paid in 1921 with the equivalents paid in 1930 and 1931, as follows: — WEEKLY.
