third set. It was as attractive a game as one. could, wish to see, with all four players playing enterprising and hard-: hitting tennis, and the long, fast driving rallies usually developed into tussles at the net. Mrs Scott was probably the best in this department, and was well supported by Miss Gibson. Miss Walte's deep .driving was an asset to her but hpr work at the net was also clean and effective.
- A Marathon Match. It took Mesdaines Miles and Peppier and Misses Hart and Pearse 47 games to reach a decision in their match, but the Canterbury pair won, the third set at 14-12. Inability of either side to break .through their opponents' service was the reason for the long fight. [ With Mrs Miles and Miss Pearse exchanging drives on tho back lines, Mrs Peppier and Miss Hart made' it their business to intercept at the net as often as possible. The Canterbury pair were Slightly the more consistent both at the net and from the baseline. A steady, hard-hitting attack, both from the long and ; short court, gave Misses Macdonald and Bloor an, easy win over Misses Mcintosh and 'Shirtcliff. The winners made hardly a mistake in the fourteeii games. . '' r South Canterbury gave their best performances in the mixed doubles, of which they won the firstthree and lost the others. Miss Wake and Browning did some gQQd work in their match, but their brilliance was not sufficiently sustained to win againßt a hard attacking pair like Mrs Scott and Eobertson. Miss Gibson's deep driving gave ' Benton plenty of opportunities for his fine volleying in. their match against Mrs Miles and Johnston, and "playing a more attacking game than their opponents, won in straight sets. Miss Sherris and Barnett were not a happy combination , against Miss Hart' and MacKay. They made many errors, and could not deal decisively with their opponents' fast attack. Mrs Peppier Jind A'Court, however, played a careful and well-judged game to win from Miss Pearse and Pearse with" little trouble. Crawshaw's overhead work and service were the decisive factors in his defeat with Miss Macdonald, of Miss Mcintosh and Cramond. Consistent work in all departments of . the game, on the part of Miss Bloor, and greatly improved volleying on *the part of Cant, gave them a wiq against Miss Shirtcliff and Innes-Jones in the onl£ threoset match in the mixed doubles.
