Kor to-morrow's Meeting the course should be in bettor Order than for a long time past, and the average horse Bhould be quite at home ion the going. Changed Hands. The Southland-owned pacer Needles, trained for a time by T. Wallis at Washdyke, is now ini the hands of D. Teahan at Pleasant Point. At her best Needles'is a very speedy pacer. Useful. B. J. Marshall has in w 'c at Addington a distinctly promising sort in Jessie Bella, a mare by Harold Dillon from Fairy Bellf, whose' owner resides on the West Coast, Jessie Bella is just the type to pick up a useful stake in the near future. Change of iLuck. W. J. Tomkinaon's luck had been out for a long time, but it returned to him on Wednesday, when at the Auckland trots he drove three winners. Free Advice had been running woll but unluckily, and her victory in the big race must have been popular. Surprise Journey iu winning the Bangitoto Handicap, showed himself a good stayer, and in his. victory in the Farewell Handicap he proved himself capable of competing successfully in a sprint race against the hoppled pacers-. There are few unhoppled trotters these days that can sprint with the pacers; and Surprise Journey's performance stamps him as a particular! ** good one. Breeding. Counts. Amongst the young horses that are being put through their facings at Kaikoura is a particularly nice filly by Travis Axworthy from Dreamy Child." This filly ranks as a half-sister to two very fair performers in Bicardo and Dreamalion, both by . Lord Althoipe, and at present she favours the trotting gait. Most of the Travis Axworthys, however, are pacers, and it is probable that onca* speeded up this youngster will go at the trotting gait. .. An Old Stager. , Harry Audubon, for some time in C. S. - After Bed Boa won tho Autumn Handicap, her connexions were asked by the judicial committee to explain the improvement in her form, as compared, with her'running on the jjrevious day; It is understood that her rider stated that Bed Sea misspd the jump out, and getting JntO a bad position, had to bo checked twice in tho running. ThG explanation was accepted. In a very poor betting pool The Smuggler (£ll2B 10s) and Night Rose (£9O) carried more thah half the investments on the Mataura High Weight and Hack Handicap. Solmuri led Shipshape," The Smuggler, * and CrOSsbow through the.straight,'and to the back of the course. At the six furlongs post, Solmuri was i/wo longths clear of Tunamoe, with Shipshape and tho favourite next. A furlbng further on, Tunamoe went up to Solmttri, and this pair led round tho far, turn from Bhljpshipe and The Smuggler, Good Gift, who had been lying laßt, making/d. forward move. Solmuri and Tunamoe ran w£dd at tho home turn, lotting Good up on the rails, and the latter, ca'tfhing Tunamoe inside the distance him home by a good length. Nighf Bose* finished fast a neek away .third, and The Smuggler and. Shipshape WOre next* E. Mackie, 'rider of Tunamoe, was oautioned to be more careful ■ in- future wlieri taking the rails in front of another horse,

Won by a Nose. Bed Boyal Was withdrawn from the Hokonui Hack Handicap; and the bracketed pair, Steetoii and Thornton (£215), Memories (£206), and Francolin (£191) "carried most of the inoney. Francolin, Some" Guy, and" -Thornton were, started from the pen. Memories was the smartest to begin, but. after going a furloflg.Colonel Que* and Thornton headed her. Thornton drew clear at- the end of thiea furlongs, and was joined by Bemindful. Bacing across the top with Crufenmore next, Thornton led into the.straight from Crubenmore, Bemindful, Steeton, and francolin. At the distance, Crubenmore had Thornton in trouble, and then Memories came with a very fast run and just got up in-time to beat Crubenmore by a nose, and Thornton was ft fleck away third. Steeton; Colonel Quex, and Bemindful were next. ' ■ '

Autumn Handicap. ' Boyal Saxon (£176 lbs) was madenearly an even moiiey'chance in,tho Autumn Handicap, with Some Toff (£92), Bed Bacer (£79), ft nd Night Maid , (£74 10s), , the best, backed of tW others. Boyal' Saxon and Some Toff led through the straight from Impertinence, Bed Sea, andShortly. Going into, tho back straight, Boyal'S&xon and Some.Toff were well clear of Bed Bacer, Bsd Sea,'" and Impertinence, and thoy recsd in this order

till after rounding the far turn. Some Toff dropped out two and a half furlongs from home, where Royal Saxon was iust in front of Bed Bacer and Red Sea and they turned into the straight in that order, with Impertinence and Shortly next. Bed Sea caught Boyal Saxon 100 yards from the post,- and Shim home by a short length. Impertinence wa» another length off third, and Shortly, Camisader, and Bed Bacer were next. Nelbar Wins Trot. . Llewellyn," with the reputation of baint? better in.'harness than in the saddle, was entrusted with £195 on his Ahance in the Progressive H&rnesß Sot Nelbar (£102), Sandown /A 964). Gold Tinge (£9SJ), and the j jolly Wave-Bay Admiral bracket /£ggi) w 6re the next fancied. All, toed well, and Cheap Money led a ffood pace, which quickly spread out the scratch horses. At the end of half a mile he was showing the way to Nel- j bar Sandown, and Celeste. Passing ] the'six furlong post Cheap Money waa still in charge :ftom Welba'r and-San-'down with Sunbloom' next, and the favourite was getting a good run on the rails. At the far .turn Cheap Money retired, and Sandown was left.in charge from Bunbloom and Nelbar. Bacing across the top Sunbloom And Nelbar displaced Sandown and led him, Jolly Wave, and Bay Admiral into the straight, with the favourite wide out next. As they turned into the straight, all in close order, Nelbar headed Sunbloom in the run home, and then Bay Admiral got an opening on the rails; but Nelbar stayed on well' and beat Bay Admiral by half a length. Sun-! bloom was a similar distance off third, and Jolly Wave, Llewellyn, Celeste, and Erin's Star were close up next. Win for Toreador. Beth Cromwell was withdrawn from the field for the Novice Handicap, and Toreador (£1774) was nearly twice as well backed as either Musent Mies (£9O), Bridget (£9s}), or Bombeau (£77). Bridget led out from the favourite and Musent Miss. At the end of two furlongs Toreador ran up to Bridget, and the pair led Bombeau and Miss Tembaron into the straight. At the distance the favourite had-the race in safe keoping from Bridget and MissTembaron. Then. Spanish Maid in- a good run, but failed to reach Toreador by a length and a half. Miea Tembaron was a half length off third, just heading Bridget, tho others being well beaten off.
