' WELLINGTON, February . 26. A. heavy decline. in the .Dominion's overseas trade-is shown in the-Janu-ary returns, issued by the Customs Department. The declared value of exports last uionth was lower than for some years, and showed a fall of £2,637,500, as compared iwith 'January of ilast year,, and of Over £4,709j000 compared with Janu-.
The value .of imports for the month, £3,012,055, waß also lower than \ for years. The-figures for Inst-month,: and fpr January, 1930, compare as follows: Jan., 1931.. Jan., 1930. Decrease. ■ £ £ £

Taking July Ist as the beginning oi the export year" the figures for seven months ended January 31st show remarkable' declines in both 'export and import values, compared with the corresponding period of 1929-30: —
Imports— ■ - Tp Jan. 31st, To Jan. 31st,' Decrease. 1931. 1930. £ £-i £ f '' 83,470,426 30,451,160 6,980,740 "Export's— ' 18,900,330 24,185,375 5,285,045 ■ Excess' of, importa-^- ' ,4,570,096 6,265,791 1,695,695
Due to a decline of nearly £7,000,000 . in imports, the adverse balance for the ' seven months' period is less by £1,695,695 than for the corresponding period of last, export year. The export values, 'however, are down by £5,285,045, so that unless there iB further heavy decline in imports, it seems likely that the end of the current export year'may 1 show-an. adverse balance, j table compares the exvalues 'for'the seven ' |ra»uary for the last five 1 ,176 ' 168 f I 6,265,791 ' ' 1 seen that the current ■ *«; exports and imports are bethe/previouafour years. « BftlTfelllJ TRADE RETURNS. a : o°p. ■' excess !tb§» Government TrQfy Overseas ~ 4 21,000,^)00 shipping income 105,000,000 fjrqjn. overseas in- ; ' ' ... 235,000,000 i BsSWjWs 1 from ehoyt inter- &t>, " ** <s&'" ,and > , ' -oiitier ■squreea of in- i ' • ... „. 70,000,000?
