THE METHODIST CONFERENCE.

SESSIONS AT DUNEDIN. WORK IN MISSION FIELD. (PSESS ASSOCIATION T«L*(MA It.) DUNEDIN, February 26. At the Methodist Conference to-day the report of the "Women's Missionary Union stated that the membership now was 2940, an increase of more than 100 members; The year had commenced with 43 auxiliaries and closed with 48. The income for the year was £ 2590, an increase of £7O over last year. The Union was now turning its attention to the advancement of work amongst Maori girls, and it' was hoped to establish a training home on a small scale in Auckland.

The report of the children's fiind showed that expenditure wa's £75 13s Id more than the income, and the com-, mitteo was of the opinion that a levy of 7i per cent, would bo sufficient for tho ensuing year. The financial statement of tho Foreign Missionary Society for 1930 disclosed an incomo of £15,249 9s, and an ex-, penditure of £21,414 3s Id, leaving a debit balance of £6164 14s Id. The Board of Foreign Missions estimated that the income for 1931 would be £14,500, and that the expenditure would be £10,(500. On the motion of the Rov. W. A. Sinclair, general secretary of the Board, it was decided "That £14,000 be regarded as the extreme limit of expenditure on tho mission field; that the chairman be asked if he can bring the expenditure within that amount, and, if this is not possible, that he be requested to indicate what steps must be taken to reduce expenditure to tho amount of £14,000; that an S.O.S. appeal be sent out to provide special help for, a general fund of £SOOO sufficient to cover, the difference between estimated ordinary income and expenditure for this year .amounting to £2OOO, to pr.event-the withdrawal of workers from the field, and also to assist in placing the mission in a. more satisfactory financial position; that contributions to the S.O.S. fund extend over a period of three years if so desired; that the financial position be reviewed at the end'of July and if the result of the S.O.S. appeal be not then regarded as sufficiently satisfactory, certain workers to be withdrawn from the mission field."

Islands Medical Policy. With reference to future medical policy in the Islands, the Missions Board recommended: (1) That Dr. Sayers return to the mission field for a further term of service; (2) that the future medical policy of the mission, be not definitely determined until tBo result of the S.O.S. appeal be known; (3) that the Board is of opinion that there.should be only one base hospital in the mission district located at Bilua or other suitable central place. It is not suggested that one doctor is to .be withdrawn. ,

On ..the recommendation .of, the Board it', was: decided th&t. the Boviana circuit be divided, and that-, a portion of the present circuit situated in the British Solomons be constituted a circuit to be named the Boviana circuit; that a portion of the present circuit situated in the mandated, territory of New Guinea be constituted a circuit and named Bougainville and circuit, and that the Bev." JV B. Metcalfe be appointed superintendent of Bougainville and Buka circuit.

It was further decided that the Board take into full consideration at the earilest possiblo date the future of Banga plantation, and that the chairman of the mission district bo communicated with concerning the.possibility of reducing the -working expenses of plantation, until the price increases, and that the working" expenses on other plantations be reduced to a minimum.

A deputation from 1 the League "of Nations Union, which was introduced by the Bev. H. E. Bellhouse, waited 011 the Conference and appealed to members to use their influence to further the aims of the Union and acquaint their people with its ideals. ■' The Bey. C. Eaton, who replied on behalf Of the Conference, assured the deputation of the whole-hearted support of the Conference, and stated that he trusted to. see a unification of man.hood at no.distant date, j The Methodist Conference was continued this morning. Mr A. Peak (Auckland) was appointed the president's legal adviser in succession to; .the late Mr J. A. Flesher. \ A motion-was carried that a commission be set up, to, go into the whole .matter of the Sunday school curriculum, and that it report to the Toung People's Board and the * Synods for the guidance of the next conference. The following order of reference for the commission was adopted:^— Are the Australian and New Zealand lessons courses '.the best available for . our - - Sunday schools, and what 1 shall we do for a further improvement from the New Zealand''schools' point of view, or what system does the commission re-' commend? 1 ' Beligipn in Schools.

. The Bey. E. O. Blamires moved that >tho conference, .in v harmony with the decision of other Churches, heartily approve the adoption of the Beligious In- , struction in Schools Enabling . Bill in vplace of the -Religious Exercises in Schools-Bill as a more adequate embodiment of the platform of the Bible-in-Schools League, and commends the activities "of the League to the suppoit of the people of New Zealand; - The motion was carried, ' 1 The Bev. B. J. James expressed appreciation of. the friendly attitude 'adopted by the"Bornan.
