AVONDALE CLUB. annual general meeting. At the annual general'meeting of the Avondale Golf Club held on Wednesday evening, Mr James Carter, the president of the club, presided over a representative attendance of-members. A motion of sympathy with Mr 11. Lightband (club captain) in tho recent loss of his son -*vas passed. The annual report, which was adopted Dy the meeting, showed that while tho •ten a membership—despite tho current depression—had been well maintained, -trfoV ie i 1 durin s tho last few weeks had dropped considerably below the corresponding figure for last year. The report referred to Mr C. H. Redhead s programmo of course constructional improvements at Avondale, now practically completed, as one of tho biggest jobs of its kind ever undertaken j m the Dominion. Chiefly in order to I ¥hi° to certain greens no less than 10,000 tons of soil and sand had een shifted, and for the improvement of the fairways 4GOO tons of top-dress-ing had been put down. The policy adopted by the club of engaging a !wj v? golf course architect had justihed itself in every ,way. Satisfaction was in the manner in which Mr Bedhead, in his plana, had taken rial advantage of tho natural and diversified golfing contours of the country. the in moving the adoption of the annual repoVt, balance-sheet and accounts, congratulated members on the success of the recent debenture issue necessary to finance the "Bedhead" impfoyements. He commented on the financial position of tho club as satisfactory, saying that but for what might bo termed special expenditure in connexion with the debenture issue, there was an excess of incoihe over expenditure for the year of £lB 19s lid. The cost of the "Bedhead" improvements, £2789 19s 6d, conferring, as it did, a lasting benefit to members had bejn capitalised and appeared as an asset on the balance-sheet. During the year considerable • additions had been made to the links plant including a new triplex mower,' and electric pumping plant, and a tractor. He congratulated members on the sporting course they now had at Avondale—particularly on the up-to-date bunkering system, and on the perfection of the-greens which, always good, had never been better than they were this year. The election of officers for the ensuing Toar resulted, with one exception, in the 1930 committee and officials being reappointed—Mr W, Clark did not seek re-eleetion. Officers for the 1931 season are:—President, Mr James Catter; vice-presidents, Messrs P. \V, Deighton and 2sT. V. Smith; club captain, Mr H. Lightband; committee: C. H. Bascand, R. A. Campbell, iSf.-L. Davin, B. J. Masters, J. B.<- McClymont, J; M. Preaton, and A. Mc-Donald-Smith; hon.' secretary, and treasurer, Mr J. M. Preaton; hon. auditor, Hf Bi C. Bingham. ' Tha meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the 1930 officers and committed, ]

' RICHMOND HILL CLUB, : , The annual general meeting of tho - ' Blchmond Hill Club wag held last evening, •when Mr y. £, Hamilton 1 presided - oyer a attendance, / The report and , .balance-sheet as alra4y- published wera adopted. "The election of officers resulted as followsj—President, Mr V. E. HamilMessrs Q. M. Hall, J. JX Edmonds, .J. S, Lawrence, sen.; , captain, Mr JF. J. Glapkin; 'secretary, ' H. Young introduced the subjfiet (S of the desirability of a' levy to carry v out a comprehensive scheme of course: improvements. He said that the club was in a "different position from other .dubs in that it did not own tho land on which its links were situated and for that reason the various commit- , tees had been somewhat diffident over undertaking any extensive schemes of improvement. It was felt moreover that , tie clubhad not received tho bosj; value for the money that had been spent and fie' therefore strongly advocated the .drawing up of a comprehensive schemo at theJjeginmng of the season 1 . To do this increased income'ypas necessary and he considered that a small levy would be preferable to an increase in subscription. , | Messrs P. J. dlaekin and F. O. Strong voiced thqir disapproval of levies, tho former suggesting wording bees as the necessary '. solution; and the latter the f opening of a subscription list. Other members spoke in favour of a lpvy. The president (Mr V. E. Hamilton) said that one. feature that should be given consideration 'was that at present subsidies could be obtained on unemployment relief work. He considered that .a comprehensive scheme was the only. way 'of taking - advantage of the present labour position- and at the same time effecting l ; much-needed improvements to the eourse, ' Mr G. M. Hall moved as a recommendatipn to the incoming committee, "That if the committee considers that improvements to tho coursl require increased -revenue, the method of raising the money should be by a levy not ' exceeding. 55.". . The motion was carried, The chairman move.d that a special vote of thanks be accorded the ladies for their activities during the year and for the manner in which they assisted in the entertainment of visiting teams. 1 It was decided to plpce on record the members' appreciation of the services rendered to the club by Messrs J. and C. | Sead-Gowing, the former as president i and the latter as captain and secretary, j Mr G. Willis was thanked for his interest in and his- assistance club, and % secretary (Mr B. H.'T. Hamil-' tan), and the treasurer {Mr J. E, Brodie) Were also thanked for their good work, during the season. ' - «
