President Machado yesterday escaped death miraculously, when a bomb exploded within a wall of the Presidential Palace near the President. A soldier, who posted guard on the roof) confessed to lowering a time bomb through an air shaft to explode when President Machado left his bed at his usual early morning hoUK The soldier," however, did not know that recent plumbing adjustments had left a pipe extended through the aperture, preventing the bomb from reaching the inteilded position. The explosion shattered the apartments over President Machado s head. ~ This is tile climax of a series of bombings which have terrified the city for many weeks. The day before three bombs wrecked a Government school. Oh Saturday dozens exploded in various parts of the city.' ' President Machado escaped death again yesterday. He was nearing the end of a public address wlien a yoilth from among a big crowd of onlookers endeavoured to snoot him with a revolver. Bystanders seized the assailant and prevented the assassination.
