SHIPOWNERS APPEAL, AGAINST PREFERENCE.
(UMlt«» raESS ABSOCIWIOH —B* . toxesate . TXJ.BOfIAfE—OOPraIOHT.) SYDNEY, February 25. The oversea and inter-State shipowners have isstteid a statement ' condbmning the arbitrary enforcement by Government regulation of preference of employment -for members of the Waterside Workers' Federation, which the High Court recently held to be valid. The statement appeals to the Senate to act swiftly and disallow, it; otherwise there 1 will recur the cumulative hold-ups and disastrous strikes of the character which paralysed shipping m 1928.
The shipowners ask what hope can there, bo for peace and continuity of work on the waterfront when volunteer labour is forbidden by Government regulation, '■ and efficient volunte.gr labour, which had afforded industrial 'peace for two and a half years, is replaced by those hitherto guilty of turmoil and strife, with great losses to the primary producers.
