OBITUARY.
MRS MATILDA GAMBLE. The death-last week'of Mrs Matilda Gamble, at;the age.of\7s years,- severs another link with the early settlers of this province. 1 Born in Cambridgeshire,' England. Matilda James came to thii young and undeveloped country in the Zealandia, arriving here ron Christma-s Eve, 1870, and for a time settled in Prebbleton , In -1872 she was married to Mr Charles Gamble ajid the first house they lived in, a small brick house in Hills road, Hillsborough, still stands. They then removed to Waddington, where for over forty years they were engaged in farming. , No complete early history of Waddington could ever be written without mention of Mr and Mrs Charles-Gamble, who By their generosity and uprightness «f character endeared themselves to alt with whom they'came in contact.: 1 Mrs Gamble wa's of a somewhat retiring disposition, but with her husband tooii a very great interest in Methodism, Mr Gamble -taking a very prominent part in the building of the Methodist Church which is erected in that district. On retiring from the farm, Mr and Mrs Gamble came to reside in Riccarton, and later in Dickens street, Addingtoii, where both sp&nt the rest of their lives. Mr/C. Gamble died in 1923. "While in Addington they with their family became-attached to the Union Methodist Church, where both Mr and , Mrs Gamble will long be remembered.
The interment, which took place at the Waddington Cemetery, was attend- i ed by a very large number of friends, | whoso presence was evidence of the I very great esteem in which Mrs Gamble was held. The Rev. John Harris, who conducted the. service at the graveside, paid a very warm tribute to the Christian character of Mr r and Mrs Gamble, fcnd on behalf of the Methodist Church I expressed his appreciation of their I work and unfailing loyalty to that Church. He also conveyed to the mem- i bers of the family the deepest sympathy of the Methodist Church in their bereavement. They leave behind them a family of nine daughters and three sons—-Mrs H.- D. Neutze (Geraldine), Mtb. E.- G. Foster and Mrs:C. Austin, both of Stratford, Mrs T. S. Innes and Mrs W. E. Baxter, of Waddington,'Mrs ' T. E.- Shepherd (Amberley), Mrs : Landery (St. Albans), Mrs G. K. Nielsen (Ashburton), • Miss Ruby Gamble Mr G, Gamblte (New Brial^ton)., Mr Charles. Gamble , (Ox-' ford), and "Mr* W. 'J. Gamble .(Racecourse Hill). They also leave 35 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
