The importation of cereals and other produce .into the Dominion from tralia :is. causing -concern;.to farmers> and at yesterday-s moefcing of the North -Canterbury , executive- of the- New Zealand Union it was, decided after, the matter hfid been thoroughly discussed, to ' request the Government to roimpose -duties on these lines.; "It is encouraging to find that not only our.'o.wn Canterbury Chamber of . Commei J ce, 'huttalao the Dunqdin Chamber, is taking the: mattgr up on -behalf of the farmer,-", said the presidents (Mr Mcintosh), when a fetter was-: ceived from the southern Chamber, ask-ing-support in a request that the Government should prohibit the -importatioji of opts, .barley, chaff, etc., from Aus-. tralia: under s the ' Order-in-Council. of July 9th, 3928.
Evasion of Duties. ''During the past few months exchange premiums in favour of Australia rose from nil to 18'5-8 per cent," said Mr Mcintosh. "Recent importations into the North Island have earned the following deductions from purchase prices; Hour 30s per ton; pollard 12s 6d per ton; oats 4d per bushel; barley 3d per bushel. The exchange position amounts imports where no -duty: is imposed .and practically mpanp-an- evasion of duties on dutiable goods, . •> . ~< ;. ■v. , "A dumping "duty can be applied to importations from foreign ' countries with-, depreciated currencies,'. but the present law does not allow of its being applied,to imports from the British Empire, It is imperative that thiß should be remedied, and the. lawj made applicable to any country dated currency.
