KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor, Rev. W. H. A. Yickery, Crs, A. B. Brown, E. J. Pollard, H. Einaldi, 3?. Thorne, H. Mcintosh, A. Linklater, S. t>. Williams, M. Kamsay, and G. Greenwood. The secretary of the Kaiapoi Library. Committee worte asking for payment of | the annual grant iron!'the Council to j the library funds. I The secretary of the Kaiapoi Swimming Olub wrote advising that the con-' ditions submitted by the Council for the taking over of the public baths by the club had been accepted. The Mayor of Christchurch wroto inviting the Council to appoint a representative to the Citizens' Committee set up to assist in raising funds to alleviate distress of the sufferers in the Hawke's Bay earthquake. : Mr W. Murphy, Eyreton, wrote applying for a, refund of half rates on unoccupied properties owned by him in Raven street and Cam road. The By-laws Committee recommended that notices "Footway only" be erected at either end of the swing bridge. The committee also recommended that parking notices, "Parking time 30 minutes," be erected in the business portion of the main street. The Works Committee recommended that the following work be carried out under the No. 6 Unemployment Scheme; Mcintosh's drain, grading the road and footpath at the Beftcn road, tatring the swing bridge, floating footpaths and extending paths at the public cemetery, and cleaning up the Council's North road reserve. ' The Mayor and Assistant Town Clerk to bo ' empowered to engage labour. The financial statement showed receipts since last mooting totalled £795 ,2s Id. Accounts passed for payment, £409 18s 9d; debit balance at the bank £BSO 2s 10d. ; . . The annual mooting of the Kaiapoi Golf Club was held fast evening. ' The president, Mr E. J. Corcoran, presided bver ii full attendance of members. The report stated that the progress of the club had been well maintained during the past season. Each year it was the policy of the club to carry out development work out of income, after making provision for meeting capital liabilities. This policy had been continued during the past year, during Which the temainder of the debenture liability h&d beota" liquidated, and the j financial position of the club further consolidated. From a playing stand- j DOilit the season had been eminently satisfactory. The ufeual iftter-club , matches had been played, and the club had been successful la the golf section of the Mcintosh Shield contest, and the Women'b club bad the distinction of Having their names coupled with the Hawarden Olub aB the winners of the cowlishaw Cup. The uatmrclub competitions were played throughout the seaVpn, the championship resulting to a win in the men's section by Mr B. J Smith, and in the women's by Miss A. A. Lynskoy. The Leithead Cup for mixed foursomes was retained by Dr, Bamsay and Miss A, A. Lynskey. On Wednesday last the tennis club held a tournament to help to raise monev for the earthquake relief fund. The weather was ideal and there waa ft good attendance of players and epect&r torß. The proceeds amounted to approximately £2 5s J1 A novelty dance, in aid of the quake funds, was held in Publip Hall on Friday night. There was a large attendance and the resultwas a noteworthy success. An energetic mittee had canvassed the district tor the sale of tickets, with the reeult that £l7 6s was thus obtained. The sum of £5 10s in cash was taken at tne door; gifts from 0. Deans £2, M. McDonald £2, G. Ferguson £1 Is, .Mrs j Burbury £l, J. Donaldson 10s, and V. Fechney 10s, a total, of £7 Ib, were received; the sale of baskets realised £2 10s 3d, while various competitions brought in £3 3s Bd, making a total of £35 16s. The expenditure amounted to £2 4s 3d, leaving a credit balance for the relief funds of £33 lis 9d. Messrs R. Bean and D. Robs officiated as M.C.'s, while voluntary music was supplied by a number of local residents. A cake, given by Miss Anderson, was won by Mr G. Duncan, and a lamb given by Mr A. Pullan was won by Mr- J. Williams, who returned their prizes to the committee to o® disposed of in some other way. Several days of hot weather wer ® followed on Sunday night by a heavy nor'-west' rain which continued tor some hours. AMBERLEY. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee there were present Mr W. Boyce (chairman), Messrs E. Chamberlain, J. D. Boyco, A. Lukey, and Mrs Laanbie. It was reported that the school reopened after the holidays with a roll number of 100, several having left the' district as well as those who gained their proficiency. The caretaker had spared no pains in seeing that everything was clean and in good order for the opening after the holidays. The repairing of the turnstile at the front gate was loft in the hands of Mr Chamberlain. Accounts amounting to £4 9s 6d were passed for payment. On the vote of the parents it was decided to hold the annual school picnic at Waiknku beach on Saturday, March 7th, leaving the school at 9 a.m. A good response to tho fundß Has been made. At a recent meeting ,of the Horticultural and Produce Society it was decided not to postpone the show, but to hold it on a smaller scale in May of this year, when -a new schedule will be drawn up and printed. Many prizes ana donations have already been received. A womer's tennis mateh between Am* bortey and Woodend was played at Amborley on Saturday. Though it has hindered harvesting for the time being, the rain was not unwelcome following so m&ny hot days* A sharp hailstorm over part of the district yesterday morning, but' £id not affect any extensive area, : So far the season has not been satisfactory, for* contract threshing mills. Breaks in the weather, high winds, ana in many eases only moderate crops, have tended to make the weekly averages low. Most of the barley crops have been averaging between 30. and 40 jmsheii to the <wre.
