CULVERDEN. Good showers of rain recently have freshened up pastures. and stimulated growth in rape and turnips. Harvesting is now well in haiid, and in several instances really good "averages are being disclosed by threshing' returns. Preparations for the Culverden ewe, fair, to* be b®ld on March 12th, 13th, and 14th, are to be put in hand shortly. Now that the bounty on keas has • been abolished these—birds are practically unmolested. What damage they may be responsible for at present is discounted by the depressed state ot the stock market, sheep being at the lowest values for some years. According, to local farmers more damage is done by seagull® than keas. The kea is a friendly little bird, and wholesale slaughtering prior to lifting of the bounty threatened its extinction. A special train of thirty-eight waggons arrived in 'Culverden from Orari during the week, carrying a load of 1 3300 two-tooth ewes and wethers, which 1 are to restock St. Helens and St. Jame3 Stations. Trains heavily ladon with stock and grain leave Culverden daily for the City. For the past few weeks an averngo of sixteen waggons of ■ stock and tM) sacks of grain have been .
