BOROUGH COUNCILS
SUMNER. A meeting of the Sumner Borougli Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr W.vH. Nicholson), Crs. 1\ 0. Cooper, O. I. Denham, J. E. Tait, V. H. B. Neville, D- F - Oldridge, and B. I\ Sandford. The Town Clerk, in submitting a statement of accounts, reported that the sum o £10,902 in rates had been paid to date leaving £525 outstanding. Accounts amounting to £2191 2s 7d were passed for Pay l "®"?- The gas, electrical, and pumping engmeer (Mr A. A. Cheshire) reported that 1,308,000 cubic feet of gas had been since the last meeting, an increase of 75,000 cu. feet 'compared with the correßponding montn of last year. He also reported-that he had attended the Gas Engineers Conference at Dunedin. Among several papers read at tne conference,; one on coal-tar distillation h appealed to him very much. He realised that it would be only a matter of time when the Council would have to treat its own tar lor road-making purposes. Details of plant Suitable for Sumner were thoroughly gone into, and in the event of such being installed he would supply all particulars. A report on waiter supply stated that_ ten million gallons of water were drawn from the combined wells and pumped into the Shag Bock reservoir, whence 41 million gallons were taken and delivered to the Upper Clifton reservoir for the,supply of the high-pressure. —The report was adopted. The Town Clerk reported that there were a number of unregistered dogs in the borougn, and that revenue was being lost by their nonregistration. He wars authorised to detail a man to make a raid on unregistered dogs. The Mayor said that he wished to express his appreciation of the manner in which tne Town Clerk (Mr J. BVMenzies), the engineer (Mr G. Harper), and the staff had worked in connexion with the organisation of unemployment relief under the No. 5 scheme. He considered that the good work of these .officers should be placed on record. The m®" who were working under the scheme nave given every satisfaction in spite of tne tact that some of them were unaccustomed to heavy manual work. He considered that tne manner in which the scheme waß worKing fully justified the policy of the Boaifd in putting it into effect. He also expressed his appreciation of the co-operation of Mr_w. *. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour DepartDent. ' ... Letters of thanks for the Council's sym-\ pathy and; practical assistance in connexion with the earthquake were received from the Napier and Hastings Borough ( An application by the Redcliffs Women s Hockey Club for permission to use 'St. Leonard's Square 'during the coming season was referred to tbfi Town Clerk to make suitable arrangements. Worgan for per- i mission to build a garage on the side of the Taylor's Mistake road was granted, subject to compliance with the engineer's requirements. . . . . .. Dr. W. H. Simpson asked for permission to erect a building on Clifton. The question was left in the hands of Cr. Cooper to make i further enquiries and to report at the, next I meeting. . . , , , , . ' Mr L B.'Beavis asked for permission to effect alterations to the footpath on Monck s Spur to obviate the 'trouble caused by,, flood waters. It "was agreed to grant permission for the carrying out of the work and to supply two-thirds of » yi»rd of screenings. The Canterbury Automobile- Association WToto enclosing a donation of £5 towards the cost of effecting improvements to. the corner at "The Cutting." The Association was thanked for its offer. . ■ As no objections had been received concernins the proposed erection of a shop at _ tho corner of - the - Esplanade and t Hardwlcke street, permission to proceed with ; the work was granted subject to compliance' by-laws. / ,
