AGROUND IN PORT
MISHAP TO HAURAKI. motor-Vessel at new PLYMOUTH. i (FBSSS ASSOCIATIO* TJ6LEGRIM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 22. The Union Company's motorvessel Hauraki grounded while beting berthed at New Plymouth on Saturday morning on the east j side of the Newton King wharf, which is seldom used by overseas ships, but it was brought into commission this week-end because of the large number of big ships in port or expected. A diver, on making an investigation of the Ship's ittll, found a fractured plate under No. 2 tank, while oil from No. 8 tank apparently had been escaping, and had risen to tho *top of the water. The mishap is not considered serious. The Ship probably will discharge, and proceed td Auckland on Tuesday, according to schedule. It is expected that tho Hauraki will go into dry dock at Auckland for inspection and repairs. The Hauraki arrived at Lyttelton on February 11th with case-oil, newsprint, arid general cargo from Pacific Coast ports of America. She left Lyttelton last Tuesday for Wellington, and sailed from Wellington for New Plymouth on Friday afternoon. She is also to discharge at 5 Auckland, Napier, Melbourne, and Sydney. Captain A. T. Norton is in command of the Hauraki, s and his officers are:— Chief, Mr D.; N. McLeish; secoiid, Mr T. Da vies; third, Mr D. Blacklaws; chief engineer, Mr J. Gardiner; second, Mr A. Step; third, Mr J. Boyle; radio operator, Mr C. Stafford; chief steward, Mr T. Gibbs, The Hauraki was the first motor-ship built for the Union Steam Ship Co., and it was largely as a result of her success as a cargo-carrier on the Trans-Pacific run that the company ordered its motorpassenger liner Aorangi. She was built at Dumbarton, in 1923 by W. Denny and Bfos., Ltd. She is of 7113 tons gross register. Her dimensions are:— Length, 450.3 ft; breadth, 58.2 ft; depth, 31.4 ft.
