SUMMER RACE MEETING.
The Canterbury Jockey Club held its one-day Summer Meeting at Siecarton on' Saturday, under perfect conditions. The lawns, green and velvety, and the gardens proudly flaunting masses of the gayest of flowers, showed that much care must have been bestowed upon them during the past few rnonths, and the weather was such that chiffon and ninon frocks and t wide-brimmed hats looked their loveliest in the bright sunshine, with a light, warm wind gently fluttering their dainty flounces. For the first time for many moons, women returned from Riccarton carrying, not wearing, coats of any kind. Praise of the weather could hardly go further. Hundreds of yards, acres almost, of patterned material, filmy ninons, chiffons, and georgettes, and more substantial crepe de chines, worn with shady hats, gave a pleasingly festive air to the gathering, while suits of -more sombre hues, and small close-fitting hats, were wc>rn by many smart women. Mrs H. A. Knight, wife of the chairman, wore an attractive frock of black reversible satin, inset with' bands of the dull side of the material, and lightened with a dainty vestee of lace and georgette. Her hat of black straw was banded and lined with cameo pink georgette, stitched in black. She was accompanied by her daughters, Mrs J; Woodhouse, who wore a navy cardigan suit, lemon crepe de chine blouse, and navy straw hat *with touches of lemon, and Mrs George Aitken, who wore a golden brown crepe de chine frock patterned in leaf designand a wide brown straw hat. THE PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly committee meeting' of the Koyal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children (the Plunket Society) was held in the Plunket rooms. There were present: Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson .(in the chair) and, Meßdames G. Aitken, E. Wanklyn, A. Bunz, L. M. Wilson, O. Benqie, P. Greenwood, H. D. Aeland, E. Garland, E. Cordner, E. Boulton, H. J. Ballin, B. M« Morten, F. Graham, A. Bloxani, J. Tait, C. Chilton, H. B. Smith, M. H. Godby, P. Thomson, A. W. Beaven, and Cecil Wood. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Ballin, sen., for a gift of needlework for the new rooms. Arrangements had been made for a Plunket nurse to meet the ferry train from "Lyttelton each morning to give any help required by the mothers and babies passing through Christchurch from the earthquake area. Constant communication had been sustained with the Plunket nurses in the North Island who were in touch with travelling mothers evacuated from the camps, and, humanised milk had been sent to the railway station when required. Members of the committee had undertaken the sale of tickets for a concort organised for the Earthquake Fund. The resignation of Nurse Summers had been received with regret, and her position in charge of the Pre-Natal Clinic had been offered to Nurse Elliot. The resignation of Sister McKinnon from the staff of Karitane Hospital, owing to an intended visit to England, was also received with regret. The president of the Papanui sußbranch reported through the secretary that it was hoped to build the new Plunket rooms, so .badly needed in Papanui, before the winter. At present the nurse interviewed mothers at St. Paul's schoolroom, by the courtesy of the vestry of St. Paul's. The growth of the work in the district had been, so great that it was absolutely* necessary that some bettor accommodation be provided for the mothers and babies visiting the nurse, and it was decided that the Christchurch committee Bhould co-operate with the Papanui Committee in arranging to finance the building. Arrangements bad been made to purchase 'a section in Bellevue avenue and the Papanui Committee, with the help of their Advisory Board, hoped to complete negotiations and start a local campaign to raise a Bum in the district towards the cost of the building. Bealising that those benefiting should support the Society when possible, the committee decided to visit those mothers whose babies were under the care of the nurses and were making progress, appealing to them to become annual members of the Society. ?he minimum annual subscription was only 5s per year, or slightly over one penny per week, and it was felt that the mothers would willingly subaeribo this sum each year if a member of the committee out that the Society existed solely for the benefit of mothers ! and babies, and although.liberally sub. i sidlsed by: the Government, yet twothirds of the money needed to carry on the work must be voluntarily contributed by the public. , It was decided %o draw the atteation of the suburban and .country iSttb.branches to the fact that conveniences, for women had been opened in the same building as the new Plunket rooms m Chester street, and would be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.>aad'.Gn; Sundays and evenings.when a band concert waj jn j at tne band rotunda Hn'PopWt avenue."
