MAGNIFICENT RACING. FAREWELL VISIT OP ENGLISH ; TEAM. \ . ■ ■: —* ■. ( Never in Christchurch lifts "such brilliant racing been seen as was produced by the broadsiding meeting at Monica Park Speedway on Saturday night. From the beginning to the end of the programme the crowd was thrilled.' by dazzling Bpeed in practically every event, such act has not been Been at the' -speedway for many weeks," .Of course the outstanding attraction was the fare* well visit of' the six members' s o'£ the English team, but the cream of the local Iriders provided opposition, which in many of the handicap events refused to be overcome. • \ i The night was a mild one, suiting the Spectators, and it is possible that there was a record crowd in attendance., Some time' before the start of the first event, there were, no seats to bo" had.on "fhe ground, and people still streamed in the, gates. • :■'. ' ;'■ •" ; ■" ' The programme had been arranged so that the English and local riders met in. icompetitionj but there■ were also races, for each group,- and that "arrangement iprovided a .feast 'of good'racing?and' 'riding for the crowd. The members of tie English team were "Squib"' ton (Leicester), George Greenwood , (Wembley), Roge? Frogley • (Crystal Palace), Norman Evan's (Wembley), •Frank BondjfSouthampton), and/ Jim Kempster (Wimbledon); All of, them rode up to expectations,"', The team was driven round tho track in a motortruck during the evening, and after, the Binging of' "Auld ,Lang Syne," the visitors were accorded three cheers, which must have been heard for miles around. There could sot have been a mora fitting or enthusiastic reception, and-it was a splendid tribute to a group at riders who have become popular in 'New. Zealand both as riders and as sportsmen. Burton, ,the star of the English team, received more than one ovation during the night. Burton has broken a record on every track in New. Zealand and the, sheer brilliance of his racing, and the seemingly easy'manner in which he controls his machine at tremendously high speeds always fascinate the spectators. He holds the present record ~ at the Monica Park Speedway for one mile with a rolling start. On Saturday night he won his heat'of the' Champions' Handicap, in lmin 25sec from a standing start, and returned lmin 19iiec for the one mile railing start to win the heat of the' English Sjsratch 'race.' It was brilliant riding. However, Burton 'provided Hhe real thrill of the night .when' he made an official attempt on his own' one mile record. He lapped sensationally for three and a half laps, and' as he turned i into the straight around the final bend,] his machine seized and stopped. It'was, bad luck, as it was announced by the ; timekeepers that time for the first three laps was 57 seconds, each of them having 'occupied 19 seconds, and if he had done, the-last lap in similar time—he certainly was in no trouble in the two-thirds he had completed—he would not only have-established a new record for Monica Park Speedway but wodld have equalled the -New Zealand record of 76 seconds 'held by Frank Pearce (Australia); and set up at the Kilbirnie Stadium in Wellington. Burton was to have madfl another attempt but his machine still gave him trouble and he was forced to /abandon it. To see - him, beat his i team-mates by 100 yards or so was a. revelation. George Greenwood, another English- f man, put up Bterling peWormancee to I win-the first heat and the final'of the t English scratch race, one mile, rolling i start, in lmin 21 4-ssec, and lmin B 22 l-sseo respectively. * Percy Lunn (Christchurch) had a field night, and for a local-rider against, such strong opposition did remarkably' well ' to win four races.''
