TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS.

TIMARU. POLICE COURT. A sitting of the Timaru Polico Court was held on Saturday morning, Mr J. P. Newman, J.P., presiding. Laurence Francis Taylor, x aged 25, who was arrested at Lyttelton, was charged with stealing at Timaru, on November 25th, £B, the property of J. H. Spencer. Senior-Sergeant I. H. Mathieson, in applying for a remand, mentioned that other charges against the accused were pending. Taylor was remanded to appear before the Magistrate's Court on Thursday, February 26th: Harbour Bace. - Conceding a start of 9 minutes to the limit man in a field bf*22 starters, D. Reid, of Temuka, swimming brilliantly, decisively won the Speechly Mile, the annual harbour race of the South Canterbury Swimming Centre, which was held on Saturday afternoon in the presence of the largest attendance during recent years. Beid thus retains the Speechly Cup, .which he won last year, ,as well as the Centre's gold medal for the fastest time. Conditions were ideal for swimming, although ithis year's, course from the Fishermanta wharf to a point of the Marine Parade was not so conducive to fast times as the old course, parallel with No. 1 wharf. Nevertheless, Beid clipped 19 seconds off his time last year to win comfortably from J. Biehards, a West End Club representative, with B. Lane/of the Old Boys' Olub, in third place. The new course from the point of view of the spectator is a considerable improvement in that the public is able to follow the progress of the race from both the Marine Parade and No. 3 wharf. This was evident in the keen enthusiasm taken in the race, especially in the_dosing stages, when, the placed competitors drew away from the field. When Beid took the water, Stark, whose handicap was lmia 455e0,, had a lead of 150 yards, and G. Coates, the limit man, wis half way through the .second lap, while Biehards and Lane,' second and third men respectively, were nearly at the end of the first lap. The , fysb three of the-six laps, eaeh of 880 feet/saw the six.'to nine-minute men closely bunched: together, but thereafter the field spread out, and eventually only about a dpsen completed the race. i At one stage/Miss P. Braeefield, of j the Timaru women's Club, was swim- 1 ming strongly and looked as though she i ttngw b* among the first two or three to finish, but she faded out of the pic-, tore in the fifth lap, when it was apparent that the race lay between Beid, Biehards, and Lane, who were going strongly. ;.
