Brigadier-Gleneral Alexander Baifd a brother ■of ; Lord Stonehaven, wa killed in, a motor collision on'the Lon don-Southampton road. , [Brigadier-rGeneral Alexander Waltei Frederick Baird was secretary of tlw Carlton Club. He Was born in 1876 He entered the Army in 1897, and served in the South African and European Wars. He was British Militarj at Madrid in 1920, and a 1 Constantinople from 1920-24. The death has occurred of Sir Edward Henry, formerly a member of the Indian Civil Service. Ffeatherston. Mr Viles was boni at Somersetshire, England, and came to New Zealand wjth his parents in 1841. The family settled on the Kaiwarra Flats, and experienced the big earthquakes of ,1040 and 1855. . .Mr Viles served in the Maori War, took part in the Gabriel's Gully gold rush, and subsequently was engaged in farming in the Wairarapa. Mr William Miles,-wlio died at New Brighton last Thursday, .was well known and respected throughout Canterbury. - His father, William Miles, was a hop farmer in Kent, and tlie family,went first to Australia when.
