"A LADY : SURRENDERS." CONTROVERSIAL TALKIE. WITH A ; . . SUPERB CAST. . "■ ' "Odo of those intriguing playa tliat is absorbingly intei'cstJng "thlroughout," with a climax that > supplies the title.''./ That it tho description given to tho talkio, "A Lady Surrenders," which opens, to-day . at the Regent. The strength of the drama comes from the fact that not only is tho story strong, but that it is also remarkably well acted.' Comedy, drama, and pathos are meted ciut in pleasingly balanced portions in this (talkie, which is made from tho well-known novel, "Sincerity," by John Erskino. The cast is an outstanding one. First there is Genevieve Tobin, a young and beautiful recruit to the talking screen, who makes a brilliant debut in this film. So excellent is she in her part that she challenges comparison with such'an actress as Ruth Chat-' terton. This may sound a bold claim to make, but those who have seen "A Lady Surrenders" do not think it is extravagant. Conrad Nagel takes the part of tho licro, that of a polished gentleman, which suits his talents perfectly, and Rose Hobart has the role of his wife; This is' « controversial film. It asks at tho outset the question,. "Is it fair for a man to cheat after marriage if his wife hits tricked him into a loveless union?" and thereafter it proceeds to supply the answer according to the lights of tho Author. Modern to a degree, the film deals with the subject of mprriago and its ifavantages and disadvantages, and ends up by assuring the audience that love, after all, is the main factor in life. The picture has been produced on a lavish scale, and the beautiful dresses shown in it ere a feature that will appeal to the feminine portion of tho audience. Tho box plans are at Tlio Bristol Piano Company.
