PEIZK GARDENS.
There has been a constant stream of visitors in St. James's avenue all this week to ingpqot the winning .garden* |n the Papunui Beautifying Association'# competition* On Wednesday a number of people from North Canterbury on their way to the City made a .detour «long the avenue to see the gardens. It is hoped in the district that Ihe Sqciety will consider favorably the suggestion of Mr H. Tillman that a competition for the prettiest street in the district should be held in conjunction with tho garden competition. As Mr Tinman has pointed out, it wouJd pl«oe a responsibility on tho individual to do his or her part toward tho bomjttflcation of the stroot. • Another suggestion that has been made is that the gsjfdens should be judged twice a year—4n the spring-as well as in the autumn." There are many beautiful gardens in Papanui in the springtime, when those gardens that have been placed do not show up so well i as they do at present. Tho spring j garden plays just as an important part in the beautification of the district, and . this, it is thought, should be taken into consideration, It was. pointed out that 1 tho *'Advance Aphburton" Association i judged' the gardens twice a year. I North soad Paving. i A£ tho Prqgress *s meeting on Wednesday evening members asked! when the paving of the portiorf*o£" the j North road) opposite . Nortbcote road,! would be competed. This part is only , ftljont two chain* in length, and at the present time Is considered to be ex- i ceedingly dangerous," The paved road at pnoh end M slightly higher, and motorists who are unaware pf this re-1 eeive a nasty sar, and are liable to < break their car springs. - There is also ' a, fair amount of loose shingle lying l about, which the passing-cars send fly- | ing to the sides of the-road, Mr L. j Griinwoqdt whose shop is ,at the corner -i of Northcoto road, ha*.had two of his j windows broken by the flying stones. According jo the contract, this part should have been completed by the end of last year, but delay was caused through covering of Kruno'# dfftin, The abstractors,' however, made a start at the of last week, and had the road dug out to the required level the fooxinouMn portion for the eldos, when they to cease operation*, bes!}ng9 ql the tob4 ft&ving to be opened, gp- agaip lor ?ew«r eonsexien with ■ St?
