I Six years ago was lulled as the result of a fall during a-race at Taumarunui. Twelve months ago the favourite for the Taumarunui Cup, Ohinemuri, ridden by H. Gray, fell, and ■ the rider received a broken collarbone. Oh Saturday Ohinemuri (O. Mclnally) was started in the Taumaruntd Cup, and again she fell while running to the three furlong post. She was in front when she began to falter, and H. Goldfineh on Hakaioa intuitively saw the danger. He rushed his horse Up on the otttfeide of the leader, and when Hakanoa was cleat in the lead from Ohinemuri, the latter fell. Valsier (H. Gray) and Cruachan (C. Goulsboro) were in behind, while King Willonyx (Fergus) was on their heela, and Tlish- . na (W. H. Jones) three lengths back when Ohinemuri. crashed. Valsier, Crua- " chafl, and trishna fell over her, and King Willonyx Was badly interfered With, This left Hakanoa with a lead of ten lengths over King Willonyx, and he romped home. Five minutes later Ohinemuri was remounted to secure third money. The ground where the • smash occurred was Vefy soft, and in the later raees the riders Were insttucted to keep out and so avoid it. None .of the jockeys Was seriously injured tout 0, Mclnally Was badly shaken. '

LATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

Arethusa's Prospects. Arethusa is quite capable of running out a solid two miles and she showed this by the mariner in which she won the Methven Cup in October. Her form , on Saturday should give some idea ot licr prospects at Auckland., Favourite for New Brighton. The early favourites for the Mace , Memorial Handicap, to be decided at : New Brighton on Saturday, are Arethusa and Tenedos, and in view of holiday racing the form of both Will be Watched with a lot of interest. At the recent Meeting at Addington, Tenedos was only started once, and then he lost all chance by standing on the mark. This is not one of his usual failings, and ho can be depended upon to do better on the grass track on Saturday. H. W. Aker's Bracket. 11. W. Akcr will have the bracketed pair, Tactless and Great Triumph, to carry his colours in tho Electric Han- j dicap at New Brighton. Both are on 24 yards behind, which represents a 2.15 mark, and either on his best behaviour is quite capable of beating this time. Great Triumph, however, is unreliable, and Tactless has disappointed on a number of occasions. At the New Brighton Meeting held in September, Tactless from a 2.17 • mark, won the Electric Handicap in 2.18 1-5, and a repetition of this form will find hita a difficult proposition this week-end. Back in Auckland. J. Shaw, who recently went South intending to set up in Christehurch as a public trainer, has returned to Auckland, says the Auckland "Star," and, believing a change is as good as a holiday, will not bother with horses for a month or two. lie has joined up with George Walker, the well-known wrestler, and they are setting up an up-to-date gymnasium and Turkish baths in tho city. Life Members. , Two men who played major parts years ago in placing the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association on a sound footing were Mr T. G. Fox and Mr 0. W. Hervey. At last night's annual meeting of the Association they were re-elected president and auditor ' respectively, but a higher honour awaited them, for they were both made life members. • Appreciation of the manner in which Mr Fox had carried out the duties of president during the past year was expressed, while the work of both men during the years was the subject of laudatory comment from all sides. A Popular Host. One of the most pleasant parts of tho Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association's meeting each year is the supper provided by Mr B. Musson, the friend of all sporting men. When, at last night's annual meeting, Mr Musson entered with his coffee, sandwiches, and other delicacies, he was received with I applause. Acknowledging the greetings, | he Walked to the president (Mr T. G. Fox) and presented hint With a nosegay of roses.

HANDICAPPING.

THE NEW SYSTEM.'' The opinion that it Would be difficult to perfect the present System of handicapping of trotting horses much furthet was expressed at last night's annual meeting of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association. The annual report referred to tho system as "the greatest innovation in the sport of trotting." The system, it added, had been well tried Out, and, at the conference of delegates held in August, it had been decided to give it a trial'fb* a further twelve months. The chairman (Mr T. G. Fox) pointed out that one of the things they must strive for was to prevent the handicapper from using his own discretion about handicapping horses which could do aboiit equal time. Mr J, N. Clarke claimed that the time had arrived when they should have fixed penalties. The Association should stand by this principle. They could do away with handicappers, for it could aimost be done by a clerk in the oMce. "All the leadittg trotting men of the Dominion met hefe night after night to try to perfect the system of handicapping further, but where did We gotf" asked Mr W. J. Tomkinson. "We Would find it difficult," he added, 'Ho improve the system any furthet and our experience is that the finer points are not appreciated by conference, So what is the use of taking them there! So few people understand them." Mr J. Bryce argued that what they wanted was that fewer horses should take part in any one race. What was the use of the handicapping system ■ when they had thirty horses in one racef ( he asked, ' The discussion then lapsed.

[THE PBSBB Special Service.] The Woodvillo Meeting concluded today in fine, Cool weather, and en & fast track, favourites had a good innings, Winning the first fivo races. Arrow Lad scored easily in the principal handicap, while Stinting Boy made an interesting reappearance in New Zealand to win the open sprint, comfortably. A Narrow Win. Easterly started a fed-hot favourite for the Hurdles, and was in a winning position all the way, being never further back th&fi second or third. When She ran otit at the last fence, however, and lost several lengths on Evening Hero, it looked as if she had lost the race, Hewever, she came again and Scored by a neck. Kaokaoroa was three lengths away third, having been well up throughout. Shining Armour was fourth, followed by Lady Alophen, Whakaari, and Black Acre. The winner's performance was impressive, for she practically threw the race away at the last fence. Her opponents, however, were a poor lot. Kaokaoroa ran an improved race. The Maidens. Beverage, an even money favourite for the Maiden Race, duly won, but ho was fortunate in obtaining a run up the rails in the straight, where four horses tvere in front of him. But for this it is probable that he would not have been in the money. Blacksmith and Chief Savage led to the straight from Kalmuk, Flute, and Beverage. Brajnbletorn came up on the outer coming into line, and had taken charge half-Way up the running. Here Beverage slipped through and went on v to beat Brambletorn by a length. Chief Savage was a head away third, with Blacksmith fourth; then Flute, Kalmuk, and Gueress. Beverage was lucky, and had Brambletorn been handled better he would have won and brought off a big surprise. He is a useful-looking four-year-old bred at Btonyhurst, being by The Ace from Brambletye, and is thus halfbrother to Thorndale and Prickles. A Comfortable Win. Arrow Lad scored a very comfortable win in the principal handicap, taking the load six furlongs from home and never afterwards giving anything a chance. Paratoo led him to the six and then lay second, followed by Otairi, Atholspear, High Falutin', and White Fang. Arrow Lad was well clear entering the straight, and eventually Won by three lengths from High falutin', who beat Paratoo by a length. Atholspear was a close fourth, and then

camo Mountain Heath, Otairi, and White Fang. Nothing had any chanco with Arrow Lad, who broke his exasperating sequence of seconds. High Falutin' was all out to beat Paratoo, who claimed a 51b allowance, but did hot improve very much on his first day's form. Atholspear was not good enough, and thfc efforts of Otairi and White Fang when they moved up on the turn W6re shortlived. Arrow Lad, White Fang, and High Falutin' were very evenly backed at the head of the pool. A Thrilling Finish. The two-year-old race provided a thrilling finish, Esteem getting lip on the post to beat the pacemakers, Chief Cook and Hampden, with just sufficient margin to declare by. St. Roger was left and took nci part in the running. Chief Cook and Hampden led to the straight from All Humbug, Esteem, Psychologist, and Teller. Chief Cook and Hampden were having a rare battle, and until the closing stages Hampden looked likely. Chief Cook finished better, however, only to go under in the very last stride to the hard-ridden favourite, Esteem, the margins being half a head and a head. All Humbug was fourth, followed by Psychologist, Teller, and Buster Brown. The winner's performance was very solid, for H. Gray was hard at him a long way from home. Chief Cook and Hampden ran well, while All Humbug and Psychologist, the latter from the same stable as tho winner, performed creditably. Hunting Cry Scores. Hunting Cry, having his first race since his success over a mile and a quarter at Randwick, started a hot favourite for the sprint. After beginning best and lying second to Taranto to tho I straight, he came on to score a very comfortable victory. There was a good race for second money, Royal Parade beating Keddar by half a neck. Dobbin was fourth after being prominent throughout, and Broad Acre arid Taranto wero next. R. Reed never had to move on the winner, just keeping him going. It was a good performance, though neither the opposition nor the time was so good aa when Toxeuma won on the first day. Acmil Consistent. The consistent Acmil scored a convincing win in the hack sprint after getting none the best of a poor dispatch and then running wide into the straight. There was one false start and when let go Mahora got all the best of it, being well clear in the first two furlongs from Money Mint, San Quex, Crash, and Pakitere, then Pass On and Staiuary. San QUex got squeezed bnck at tho half, and on the turn the order was Mahora, Crash, and Pakitere from San Quex with Statuary and Acmil moving up. Once in line Statuary drew up and was clear over tho last furlong. Acmil then came with a rattle and got up to win by half a neck. Pass On was a length and a half away third, with Mahora fourth, then King Hal, San j Quex, and Pakitere. The winner won too well for any excuses for the others, but the favourite, Pakitere, was outside several horses all tho way, and better ridden might have tlono better. Arajcan got lost at tho start and never had any chance. Pilar Lap's Sister Shows Form. The feature of the hack distance event was the forward showing of Phat Lap's sister, Nea Lap. So far she has shown very moderate form, but to-day she swept up on the outer on the turn and beat all but tho winner, Pewa. PeWa was always Well placed in behind the leaders, Arrowzone and Tripping, and once 110 made his run the raco was Over, his margin at tho post being a length nnd a half. The favourite, Tripping, failed by a head to withstand Nea Lap's run, and Jayson'was right tip fourth. Jayson was unlucky, for he had to como from tho rear "of the field. Spcaropa and Arrowhead finished next after good races. Lordliko did not get a good run. He had no luck at the Meeting. Nea Lap carried only £l4, bo her dividend for second wa» sub*stantial, and tho largest of the Meeting. An enquiry into Lordlike's running was held, but no action was taken. A Convincing Win. Kahikatoa won his double in convincing Stylo, again being handy to the leaders, Queen's Choice and Tahoma, to the straight, and then running home tod strongly for his opponents, beating Tahoma by a length and a half. Tahoma lasted long enough to beat Desert Song by a head. Bolt Front finished well into fourth place, and then came Rory Mor and Queen's Choice. It was again a good thing for the 1 winner. Tahoma should Soon win a tace, and Desert Song ran Well. Head Serang was unlucky-.
