PAPANUI LIBRARY.
The annual meeting of subscribers of the Papanui Library was held laat evening, Mr J. Chatfield presiding over a fair attendance. The secretary (Mr J. Reynolds), in his annual report, stated that during the winter months the membership had reached the record total of 365) but it had fallen off when the power shortage was on. At present the number bad again risen to 330, which was nearly 50 more than last year. Eight hundred new books had been added to the shelves, bringing the total up to nearly 5000. The librarian (Mrs M. M. Hall) reported that the introduction of the books on travel had been greatly appreciated. There was a great demand for them, showing a tendency for a better class of reading by the public. The increase in membership was largely due to this section, and if the present progress was maintained a larger building would soon be required. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £52 12s 7d. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mr J. Chatfield; vice-president, Mr E. C. Ayrey; secretary, Mr J. H. Reynolds; librarian and treasurer, Mrs M. M. Hall; committee, Mesd&mes Beynolds and Barnett, and Mr J. Stnrsock.
