THE WAIMAKARIRI
MEETING OF THE TRUST.
The Waimakariri lliver Trust met yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs J. H. Blackwell (chairman), W. P. Spencer, H. E. Evans, George Gould, A. Manhire. R. 0. Dixon, J. Leslie, and Professor R. Speight. Mr Manhire was given leave to withdraw his notice of motion advocating tl.o establishment of a special Works Committee. He suggested instead that each month three members be elected, together with tlio chairman of the Works Committee, to inspect the work and report to the Trust. This was agreed to, :md Professor Speight, Mr Spencer, and Mr Evans were appointed a, Committee of Inspection for next month. The Land Put-chaise Committee reported that it had agreed to pay £'575 m full settlement for land owned by Mr E. Parkin which had been taken. Mr Ilichard Smith had agreed to accept £40() in full settlement of his claim for land taken, and this oiler had been accepted. • The annual subscription of £lO to the Canterbury Employers' Association Was authorised for payment. The Finance Committee reported having received from the Post and Telegraph Department an account for £437 18s od for relaying the telegraph lines over the bridge across the Waimakariri. The engineer and secretary were deputed to make a settlement. Engineer's Report. The report of the engineer (Mr M. W. Harris) showed that 'the small excavator was still working on Coutts Inland loading dump trucks and drays for the erection of the new embankment. The portion in JEnglebrecht's was almost completed. Very shortly the machine would have to be laid up lor overhaul. Tho big excavator had made good progress on the Clarkvilfe embankment through East Eyre ton. Atier_ about six weeks' moro Work this machine could be handed back to the Public Works Department. A email flood had occurred on November 16th, when the first water had passed through the spillway at 5.30 fi.m. Tho discharge had not been sufficiently great for the water to reach right down tho diversion. Tho motor launch had been overhauled and painted. In a few days' time ; when tho tides were suitable, soundings would bo taken over the bar and in the neighbourhood of tho mouth of the liver. Tenders Accepted. The tender of A. Rice, for £ls, had been accepted for the cutting rights for the season of the lucerne in the paddock adjoining Coutts Island bridge. For the removal of the old creamery buildings on Coutts Island, the tender of J. Dobby for £2l was accepted. For the removal of buildings from land purchased from Mr E. Parkin, his own tender, for £ll, was accepted. Mr Harris also reported that the demolition of the old Skew bridge had been completed. The counties concerned should, he stated, bo advised that the old concrete abutments on tho right bank must also be removed; otherwise a dangerous scour would set in along the bank. It was decided to do this. Erosion Complained Of, Mr G. H. Judd, Waddington, wrote complaining that the Waimakariri was oroding his property. He asked that something be done. Mr Manhire said that this land was outside the rating area. The engineer is to furnish a report. Mr Spencer gave notice that he would move, at next meeting, that a pilot channel be cut between the tWo stop banks at the Empire bridge.
