Determined efforts aro still being made to smuggle liquor into the United States from the sea, according to the annual report of Commissioner James M. Doran. One preventive officer wiio had recently returned to headquarters, said the progress of liis men through t&e Stnte sounded like the Battle of the Marne. So many rifles, fired at sec distances, warned the people of their approach. Last year Federal officers made 68.000 arrests, with 54,000 convictions, and fines exceeding £1.000.000. Afotorcars and motor-boats worth £300.000 ;vfre confiscated. For the year ended Juno 30th. gaol sentences aggregating _ over 14,000 rears were imposed on violators of th® Volstead Act. There were 22,405 gaol sentences out of 54,05-j convictions, and 507 charges of corruption among Prohibition Enforcement officials -were investigated. In a very large proportion of cases the charges -were either absolutely disproved, or dropped for lack of evidence. Two million gallons of whisky teese legally manufactured for medicinr.! purposes.
