HIGHBANK. The Highbank Tennis Club played a match against the Lyndhurst Club on Saturday. Highbank won by 13 sets (103 games'* to three sets (57 games). The Highbank B team played at Chertsey on Saturday, Highbank winning by 10 sets (84 games) to sis sets (81 games). ANAMA. The' rainfall recorded at "Laggan during November was 323 points, compared with 284 points in November last year. This brings the year's total to 30.45 in, as against 36.28 in last year. The district has had an unusual amount of lightning and thunder this season, but beyond the fusing of electric wires no damage has resulted. No news has yet come to hand in regard to the rebuilding of th© school, which was destroyed by fire last July, although the chief inspector has been, making enquiries in the district. Meanwhile, school is carried on under many difficulties in the shelter shed. Residents are hopeful that the new school will be built before next winter. Church services are being held in the school shed, about twice a month, but as the old school served as the district's "hall" for concerts, socials, etc., such gatherings have had to be abandoned.

MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting o£ the General Committee of the Mayiield A. and I'. Association was held, when the president (Mr J. A. Fleming) presided over a large attendance. The Ashburton Chamber of Commerce forwarded their annual balance-sheet. A number of donations to the prize fund, and also special prizes were received. Messrs R. Oakley, G. E. Gumbrell, and T. S. Johnstone were appointed delegates from the Association to attend the meeting of farmers to be held in Christchurch today. The secretary was instructed to make arrangements for the purchase and cartage of posts. Eight tenders were received for the labour of erecting cattle-pens, and the tenders of Shearer, Bros., Methven, at £26, was accepted. Five tenders were received for the erection of a committee room on the Association's ground, and the tender of Shearer Bros., of Methven, at £329, was accepted. Mr John Eose, of Anama, was elected a member of the Association. Messrs H. C. Barton and G. Johnston were congratulated on their successes at Timaru and Christchurch Shows. METHVEN. EALING

A combined social was held by the Ealing and Hinds "Women's Institutes in the Ealing Hall. The hall and supper room were tastefully decorated. Mrs Davis (president of the Ealmg branch) occupied the chair, and was supported by Mrs E. Hanna (president of the Hinds branch). The gathering was large and representative, friends being present from Arundel, Uangitata, and Lowcliffe. Items, vocal and instrumental, were interspersed with games and competitions. Those who contributed items were: Mesdames Ross Brodie, Hanna, and Marshall, and Misses Bruce, Framptou, McTveage, MeGuigon, and Mr B. Brown. Mesdames Donaldson and Brown and Miss Simmons were the accompanists. An amusing opening chorus was sung by a group of young members. A bountiful super provided by those present, was dispensed by Mrs Good and a willing band of helpers. It was decided to hold a demonstration ot mattress and quilt making, and also of cake ioins a-fc the next meeting.

Mrs Charles presided over an attendance of fifty. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Davis, of the Ealing Women's Institute, in the death of her mother. It was decided that a letter be sent to Mrs J. M. H. Tripp, sympathising with her in her illness, and wishing her a speedy recovery. It was arranged that the picnic be held at Peel Forest. JSpleDdid demonstrations in cake icing were given by Mesdames Patterson and Claydon, two Christmas cakes heing iced. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the demonstrators. A competition, the best Christmas gift, made from material not costing more than 2s, was won by Mrs Patterson. game, musical parcel, was ivon by Mrs Pratt. Good business was done at the sales table. The hostesses were Mesdames Cormack, Ivye Hampton, Galletly, and Morris, and Miss Bray. Howard Hall, Arundel, was filled to overflowing, the occasion being an entertainment given by the Arundel Women's Institute. A concert occupied the first part of the evening, and was followed by supper and dancing. The following was the programme:—-Instru-mental trio, Misses McGarva and Henderson, and Mr A. White; song, Miss Ashby; recitations, Mr Hewitt; song, Mrs McKenzie; recitation, Mr Hewitt: song, Mrs McKenzie; song, Mrs Ribbs; All the items were heartily ppplauded. -Irs Williams gave an address on Women s Institutes, explaining their obA'cts and describing how the movement was growing. parts were well taken by Misses Ashby and Tavcrncr, Mrs Morris and Messrs J. Hewitt, J. Worthington, and Morris. The president (Mrs Charles), who presided, carried out her duties in a very capable manner, and was given a beautiful bouquet b}' Institute members. The bouquet was presented by little Lorna Upritehard. After supper eight of tho younger Jnstituto members, who were trained by Miss Bremner, danced very gracefully two folk dances, which were much appreciated. Mrs Charles supplied the music for the dancing. Those taking part were Mrs Black, Misses Ashby, Taverner, Upritehard, McDonald (2), and Johnston (2). A competition for a Christmas cake, which was made and given by Mrs Patterson, was won by Mrs Gould. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr Kelland, Miss McGarva, Mr J. Callanan, and Mr A. Popplewell. Mr Hewitt was M.C. A large number of People attended the fortnightly social in the Howard Hall, Arundel. The prizes were won by Mis W. McDonald and Mr W. Foster, and consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs E. Johnston and Mr F. Cain. Music for the dance was supplied by Messrs Popplewell and K. Giles. Mr W. Foster was M.C. MT. SOMERS. Those present at the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers Road Board on Monday were—Mr J. R. Lockharci chairman), Colonel R. B. NeiU, and Mr E. J. Waugh. The overseer's report showed that one team had been engaged on the Ashburton Gorge roads and another in the Bushside district, | while drain cleaning and surface work, j authorised at the previous meeting, had been carried out. The clerk reported that rate payments during the past three months had shown a substantial decrease compared with those for the corresponding period last year. The bank balance showed a credit of £398 at November 30th. Tenders were opened for shingling at Barossa, that of L. Robinson (Mount Somers) being accepted. The Mt.
