EVENING PARTY IN THE GARDENS. Beneath the gicat trees of the Gardens, while tlie setting sun turned the clouds to gold, the Christchurch Folk Dance Society held an evening party yesterday. On the groen grass in tho twilight, girls and men danced the old, half-forgotten dances ot' the English countryside, met, linked hands and parted, in the way that lias been traditional in the English counties for centuries. As the twilight deepened, and as the dauce of "The Merry Milkmaids" succeeded "Bonnet So Blue," and "Picking up Sticks," followed that ancient adventure of childhood, "Oranges Lemons," tho gay shimmer ot the dresses faded, leaving only the white figures of the men and the pallor ot an occasional white dress passing passing again through the multitude of dark, moving figures. Seen from a distance through tho tree trunks, or from across tho river, with each dancer thrown into sharp relief toy the level rays of the searchlights that were turned upon tlieni, the dances took on a new and mysterious maimer —a manner, perhaps, unintended oy their originators, but wholly novel ana interesting. mll «,r From the tea kiosk came tlio music of the gramophone orchestra P'ay l . the old settings by Cecil Sharp, every now and then were drowned hv a sudden hand-clapping or a sudden shout from the dancers. Round ai.ci round the figures went, raised then hands to clap them in the air, them and swung for a moment, on y to separate again and continue onward movement of tho dunce. At ten o'clock supper was scr Y®" in tho kiosk, the hostesses being tho Misses G. Ferguson. K. Cooper, M. Kennedy, L. Saunders, and L,.
